The infamous and misnamed Estrus Buzz

Postby >>>---WW----> » 08 06, 2026 •  [Post 1]

I've been reluctant to mention this sound for fear of making some people angry. But here goes. This call has a lot of emotion and maybe even a little desperation in it. I remember one well known fellow coming up with it and giving it the name Estrus Buzz. He claimed it was the sound cows make when they come in heat and it drives the bulls mad. Well, I've been lucky enough to see an elk mating sequence a time or two and there was definitely no so called ectrus buzz sound involved. The cow may give out a little whiney squeal that you'd be lucky to even hear if you more than 75 yards away. And the bull might do some huffing and snorting sounds and maybe a little glunking prior to the actual mating.

So after I heard this guy demonstrate the sound, I told him that I thought it was sound a lone cow or calf would make when lost or separated from the herd and pleading for companionship. He finally admitted that maybe he had misnamed the sound.

So here's the deal! Go on YouTube and do a search for (Estrus Buzz) and draw your own conclusion. Then, let us all know what you think!

I have been looking at some electronic gadgets. Some have a lot of nobs and buttons you can posh or turn. Basically, they all do the same thing, but you can distort the sound or volume to suit your personal taste.
Just like my radio or truck, I like to keep things simple. When it comes to elk hunting, I use the same philosophy. Keep it simple and don't over think it. I think people who peddle those sounds very rare sounds are just trying to suck you in to buying their junk. BTW: I have never heard an estrus buzz either.

Look it up John. I think you'll find that it is a real and not often but not un - often used elk sound either. And I do totally agree with you many people are using all kinds of calls and gadgets just to take your money.

And speaking of gadgets, hows that E Bike working out for you? :lol:
