Elk camp upgrade/pert?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 03 24, 2026 •  [Post 1]

Yep.. I know some of you wild Bohemians have a pretty extravagant Elk camp. What is the/a one thing that you’d recommend above and beyond the standard pack list for the next elk camp? I’ll start. I use the heck out of the Camp Chef propane powered oven. Bake, reheat your frozen camp chow, name it… works like a champ.

I agree with your Camp Chef Oven. I keep one here at home in case of a power outage. But you need something to put it on in elk camp. A walker for handicap people works great for this purpose. Just clamp a plywood top on one and WA-LA you're all set! The whole setup folds up for easy storage during the off season.

I use stackable plastic totes with lids to keep everything clean separate and organized, one or two Folding tables and a good tarp over the kitchen and dining area. The tarp needs to be leaning and supported in the middle so it will not fill with rainwater and collapse. I learned this the hard way. The totes will save you a lot of space and keep mice at bay. Since I use a large A-wall tent and good heater is important on an extended hunt. I have a large propane Mr. Buddy and a wood stove. I dry camp so I take about 30 gallons of water in plastic containers. They will last most of a season if I am careful with my water usage.
I don't cook much. I will fry or barbeque things, or heat and eat things that are quick.

One random thing i just thought of when reading these was my four wheeler trailer. We use it as a table and it works great.

A 2 gallon plastic weed sprayer makes a great camp shower. Just add warm water and add about 6 feet of plastic tubing to it. I shortened the wand on mine so it is a little easier to manipulate. Also if you want to paint the sprayer flat black you can fill it up and set it outside where the sun will shine on it all day and it will make the water warm enough for a shower. This saves having to heat water up over a fire in a separate container.

I have bathed in a cold creek at night, and I have had warm showers. Personally, I prefer to take a warm sponge bath. I uncover only what I am washing starting with my head. After washing my upper body, it gets covered again right away.

Did someone say shower? I can go for a while without one. Marino wool and polyester are your best friend. But once I kill an elk and wrestle it into pieces I need a shower. Sometimes I’ll drive into town for a shower and a celebratory beer.

Before my partner, Tom passed away. He had one of those hot water shower systems. Put it in a bucket of water and plug it in instant hot water. I built a shower. I’ve used it for two summers, but haven’t had it into elk camp yet. It’s a Cadillac. Runs off of a gas generator. I have a one and a half hp pump. From there, I run a T with one end going straight to a valve. The other end goes to a Rheem point of use hot water heater. That goes to the other valve. It all hangs on the frame of a nice sized pop up shower tent I got from Amazon. Walk in and turn the valves just like home. It takes 35 minutes to heat 6 gallons HOT. After that, just like at home it refills as you use it. I have three-quarter inch pipe on everything until I get to the showerhead. Water pressure and volume are crazy high. Actually I think I’m going to redo that with some half inch. I used shark bite couplers so everything comes apart easily. It wasn’t cheap, but it’s priceless.

I also have a camp chef oven. A couple burners on top and an oven big enough for a frozen pizza or a lasagna. Also priceless. In a pinch that thing will take the chill off of your tent in the morning.

The only other thing I can think of is my DeWalt USB adapter. I have lots of DeWalt power tools, and plenty of batteries to go with them. I can use the adapter to recharge any of my electronics as well as my Anker power pack which goes to spike camp.

I brought a big foam mattress pad once when we were truck camping. Everyone made fun of me. I slept like a baby.

My brother gave me a Memory Foam pad about 2 1/2 inches thick that is just the size of my cot. Wonderful! Blizzard the Travel Pillow and I both appreciate it very much.

Lefty I did the same thing. Sold my 27ft toy hauler and converted a cargo trailer. If you have electric… a generator you should take a look at the Rheem point of use hot water heaters. Really easy and heats water fast. You can set the temperature. I just put it on Max hot. That way I use more cold water and conserve the hot for the next person. Once I fill the heater with 6 gallons and then put the intake into a 6 gallon water jug I have enough for several showers. Plug in pump and heater, do something else for a half hour and shower away. A little green light comes on when the water is fully heated. I sleep way better clean!

Joe.

Thats one of the set ups I was looking at making,, only the whole world would have a view no shower/potty shelter.

LOPL I was thinking of a 12 volt pump,, but your pump looks more what I would like

Received a few days ago and set up today. The new cook shack for the fall elk season has landed! I’ve used the gazebos for many, many years as cook shacks set off the wall tent a bit. They work great but only seem to last a handful of years. This new one is kind of cool, it has attachable/removable walls to be adjusted as weather dictates.

I received a Portable Winch for a retirement gift and it has been very useful.
Pulling trees for wood, clearing windfall, dragging a moose out. Etc

I like your cook shack RJ. I just use a tarp, but I may get a Bimart shack. I also have four 25W solar panels connected, that are useful for lighting and keeping my deep cell battery(s) charged.

Also, Welcome Ghosthunter. BTW: Sometimes I feel like I am a ghost hunter too. I need a picture of a bull elk to help me remember what they look like.
