Wyoming 13 points archery

Postby Timber02 » 01 16, 2025 •  [Post 1]

It's been awhile since I have been on here but was hoping to get some friendly advice. I have hunted the Snowies on a general tag (archery)but was looking at burning my points on unit 11 there or 38,39 in the Bighorns. I have never been in the Bighorns and I understand that there is a lot of elk and people. I have been in other situations with crowds and although prefer to stay away from them I have had luck. As far as the Bighorns, how big are these crowds? This will be my first and only higher preference point area that I have been in and trying to make it the best for my son and I. Not looking for a huge bull but more of a good hunt with a great time(vocal bulls help) : ). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Email is aclha1224@gmail.com if you would rather talk that way. I had a great guy that helped me in the Snowies but he has since passed away. He was going to help with some advice in 11 once I got my tags but unfortunately things happen. Thanks!

You likely won't find opinions. Elk are in all of them. Study the terrain, population statistics, migration patterns etc and decide which area you want to roll the dice in

Well I guess this forum has changed then. There used to a bunch of generous people that would help with their related experiences.

I’ve never hunted in Wyoming before so I’m no use to you as far as what area you will be hunting in. I would love to talk strategies and tactics with you that you and your son might be using but I know nothing on areas in Wyoming. Good luck to you on your hunt.

I appreciate you and as soon as we get the unit hopefully we can do that! I have been out elk hunting many times in the western states. I have only been in WY once and this is a special, long awaiting hunt at 13 years. Hoping to get some insight on the 3 units or any other suggestions to units if possible. Don't need a GPS way point to a unit or a honey hole.

I use to hunt and trap eastern Wyoming, Last on the west side was 22 years back ,, Have friends in Laramie and Green River.

https://wgfd.wyo.gov/sites/default/files/2023-03/Statewide_Map_Help.pdf

However the west side to central had big winter kills in 23

A Minnesota buddy has about the same number of points , He plans to hold off anther 5, 6 years

That is very useful information Lefty! I really appreciate that input! That is something I would probably have never looked at. I did see the success in 11 went down considerably around that time which explains this. Thanks!
**I read that wrong, the west and central** I don't think 11 is considered central.

The whole state got hammered except for the SE corners. I was headed out to SD for snow geese. Easter and NE were somewhat spared. However they did get hammered the first of April. I was headed east, the Spring storm had gone through 3 days earlier there were still only one lane open through most of Cheyanee. But they also got some very warm winds that melted a lot quickly

Thanks Lefty! I have been talking to Joe and I think this is a good option considering my inability to get scouting done and the years gaining preference points. Not to mention my last minute decision to try to burn the points. I really appreciate your info you have provided. Years ago when I was on here more, it was guys like you, saddle sores, Indian Summer and the tree stand hunter(sorry can't remember his name). I forgot some over the years but there are more. This was my most enjoyable forum that I have been on. Hopefully if I draw, I will post some details of the adventures in September!

You might draw a type 1 license in 38 or 39 but you can’t archery hunt with those. A type 9 tag in those units is needed for bow season and it takes 15 points to draw those. There are other Bighorn units worth looking at but you can’t hunt the St Cloud Wilderness.

That was the regular. If you really want to Hunt 38 or 39 you could spend the $2000. 13 points is on the border of drawing in 38 but you can easily draw 39 with 13 points in the special.
