NW Colorado, Hunting a new are this year

Postby Pushin Timber » 09 30, 2024 •  [Post 1]

I am a long time hunter in the White Rive National Forrest. We have decided to move to a new location and hunt Unit 11 in NW Colorado. I have done a lot of map reading and looking at the Colorado Hunting Atlas, spoke with wildlife management. I think I have a good idea of the animal movement and we have couple of places we would like to hunt. This is new terrain for us, we come from heavy timber and hills and this looks to be more flat and open, its hard to tell the height of the vegetation there, I am hoping it is short enough to see over while walking. Is anyone familiar with the area north of 40 near Maybell? We will arrive early Friday morning and set up camp, I am curious to know where most of the camps are set up. I know it is first come first serve, in my old unit I was familiar with return hunters and where they like to set up, here I have no idea where other hunters will be.

That area was hit hard with winter kill the winter before last. Elk numbers are rebounding, but slow. I initially I would contact BLM area office and get a land status map.

Looks pretty flat, there's one or two high rises you could probably glass north and south from. Sagey. Cross mountain looks steep and rugged

Welcome to the forum Pushin Timber. Best wishes on your hunt. I am sorry I can't help you with any Colorado hunting advise, but to pay attention to Saddlesore and WW if he is paying attention now. Those old farts know elk hunting over that way.

Pushin Timber: Unit 11 does have some resident elk but is considered more of a wintering area. Lots of December cow hunters like the area around Goviva Rim.
Lots of hunters camp at the Maybell city park and drive out from there. Water and toilet available there. As well as the Maybell store for gas and supplies. There are usually a few camps along County Road 10 and some on the south access to Godiva.
The area is mostly cedars and sagebrush. (Lots of road hunters)!
Just about all of NW Colorado is still trying to recover from the terrible winter of a couple of years ago.
To be honest with you, I would personally look for a better place except for the late season cow hunt. But I wish you all the luck in the world if you are dead set on hunting there.

Thank you all for the information.
Trying this new area because of the road hunt availability. Some of the Veteran hunters in our group need the mobility without the elevation and hills. We will give it the old college try and see what shakes up.
