On the hunt

When you have service post up what is happening on your hunt.
Today,
yesterday
This week.

I wasn't feeling good yesterday when I got up to camp.
Took care of some camp chores
Called my wife
In bed before sunset.
Up at 4:39
At the trailhead 5:48
Julian Andrew went off on their own I couldn't keep up.
I was able to work the wind until nearly 4:00 in the afternoon.
Only excitement today was a dough who is standing downwind of me that just couldn't figure out what I was. I messed with her for about 7-8 minutes before she gave up and wandered off.

Julian Andrew went out for the evening last night,
A whole herd came in 20 cows and calves and the bull.
The bull wanted nothing to do with the unknown cow ( Andrew).
Number of the cows got close but the bull hung up at about 90 yards and called all the cows back.

So this evening I'm trying to rehydrate and prevent leg cramps.

Of course these guys are only 850 yards from camp

I've been glassing for the last hour and a half.
Sun just set
I think I see the bull that we're going to go after in the morning. 10 and 12-in fifths
Thick 14 inch 4 th.
What was even more interesting as he was really working the cows

I just got a phone call from Andrew. Julie doesn't have many days to hunt this year and said she was going to shoot a cow.
For the past 20 minutes she has had cows surrounding her at 20 plus yards.
They were very entertained by a calf dancing splashing in a wallow,a d making all sorts of sounds.

What's really interesting I get very poor cel reception.
Andrew and Julie's gets great reception and many of the places we hunt.
This morning they went in after the bull that I watched last night.
At first light another bowl pushed 20 cows into the basin.
They have been texting me back and forth when I have cell reception.
They are surrounded by 40 cows and two herd bulls
They're quite worried they're going to get busted by the wind before a bull gives him an opportunity to shoot.
I haven't heard from them in over an hour.
So I'm guessing it's kind of intense where they're sitting

I wish I was there.
Julie and Andrew waited on a bull,, the herd was drifting away and they were in a small sagebrush basin. The bull was staying in the quakins 80-plus yards away.
Julie didnt range and for once she shorted the distance, let an arrow fly on a yearling cow.

And sage brush doing what sagebrush does. Jumped up and grabbed her arrow.

They tried to follow the elk throughout the basin but couldn't keep up.
They cme home yesterday.
I glassed and sat in my blinds most of the morning..

Nothing happening today only a chipmunk to entertain me

My daughter went u this evening. I get to see the Doc in the morning.


We have cows coming into where our camp is, Ive got to get a fence up

The views are gorgeous and the ponies are pulling their weight. Now, just need to get into elk that will cooperate. First day, found some bedded cows that weren't into my mews. Today, ended up nose to nose with a nice bull with 5 cows on our walk in. Didn't smell me, just seen the horses up close and personal then scattered. The herd seemed confused and pattered around before working back across the saddle they came from. Hoping they'll stick around the timber they came from to make a move on tomorrow. Very quiet animals so far.

Sunny, warm days

Yesterday we took a rain and snow day Julie and Andrew headed home.
This morning I had a slow start.
The original plan was to go in after a bugle I heard yesterday.
With my late start I thought I better at least glass the mountainside. I'm sitting here listening to two different family groups of coyotes yelling howling and yipping and barking at each other.

I spotted three bulls off in the distance.
And there are no cows with them . It will still take me a couple hours to get to them

I had a wedding Saturday . The fellow that got me in the archery his daughter was getting married. I hunted hard Friday and didn't get back to camp until way too late cuz I was chasing around with the five-point bull until well after dark.
I won't be hiking the dark anymore

While I was not in the blind.

Lefty: This happens to torment you. That bull is just not playing fair.

Last night:

Thunder and lightning and nearly 1/2 inch rain.
5:30
Mule deer and two fawns
Whitetail and two fawns
Button buck walked up 8 yards to my blind
two more does strolled around and fed
7:00 Pouring rain
Grouse feed right in front of the blind.
&:50 Pm too dark to see my pins inside the blind
Pack up and head for the trail to hike out, It was kind of dark, unbuckled my holster and put the bear deterrent spray in hand
LST 8:04 Stepping past my old blind location,, an elk spun and charged out the trail ( big track so likely a/the bull) Follow his track out my trail, Ki
Kind of cool the moon had peaked out and my reflectors were actually "glowing and led to the trail that enters the timber

The trail was nasty and slippery even the bull had been slipping

Two more tracks joined the trail,, 100 yards later I bumped them,,, as much noise as I was making, huffing and puffing I was less than 40 ards when they busted I felt good there were elk around,, but this was my 3rd time hiking out in the dark , I need to quit doing that when hunting alone

I left camp at 5:30.
We listened and waited where we parked the trucks
Until 7:30 a.m.
The fogs / clouds or so heavy.
I could barely pick out what was unable to distinguish that my daughter was 23 yd in front of me.
After about 10 minutes I knew there was a elk in front of us under 80 yards.
Which was confirmed by the tracks when the elk decided to run off .
We made a total of three stands in a relatively small area we knew the elk were there
About 10:30 my daughter was cold so we packed out.
