First harvest, by weapon, by critter…

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 29, 2024 •  [Post 1]

On the tale of Swedes favorite weapon thread….Ok here’s the question(s)…. What was your first harvest, by critter, by “weapon”? Example would be Elk-bow, mule deer rifle, cougar-rifle, whitetail-shotgun slug, moose-rifle, black bear-bow, caribou-rifle, Bigfoot-javelin, wild hog-smokepole, goose/duck/pheasant (ya Lefty and Tigger, we’ll include birds in this thread ;)..), speed goat-rifle, beaver-#4 victor spring trap drown set, blue grouse-bow, you get the picture and 3, 2, 1… lets go.

As always, please elaborate on any and all of your first harvest if you wish.

First was a ruffed grouse with a shotgun hunting over our labs when i was a kid. Hunting pheasant and the dogs flushed a grouse that flew right up into the nearest tree and sat there, made it easy for me. First big game was a dink whitetail buck i got with a blr .270

pheasant-single shot .410 shotgun
duck-single shot .410 shotgun
goose-single shot 20 ga shotgun
deer-single shot 20 ga shotgun
elk-300 WSM rifle
antelope-7mm-08 rifle
moose-300 Savage rifle
mouse-standard wooden trap
beaver-870 Remington 20 ga
fox- Beretta 390 12 ga
coyote -Beretta 390 12 ga

The moose weapon is kinda interesting as it is not much of a rifle for chasing moose. But in 1987 we borrowed this rifle from a neighbor to go moose hunting and were told it was plenty of gun to go moose hunting with. We didn't realize how underpowered that cartridge is. But, put a bullet into the back of a bull's noggin' and it doesnt take much gun!

goose sitting on the river in the late spring, hit with a rock. We ate the goose, but I had a very hard time cleaning and plucking it. We killed and ate what the Lord provided.

I'm assuming you meant $2.00/#? Otherwise you should have been investing in real estate at 13.

Gee! That's a hard one. But I suppose it was a red squirrel I shot with my old Iver Johnson 410 when I was 10 or 12 years old. Still have that old shotgun.
