I am still kicking

Postby saddlesore » 09 16, 2023 •  [Post 1]

I have not been doing well for quite awhile, but figured I had best at least give this elk season a try. My long time hunting partner is in worse shape than I and had to go home after the third day so I didn't get to hunting until Tuesday AM. That ended up a nice nap in a sunny meadow.

Wednesday I went to an old honey hole and there were three elk walking across a small meadow at about 6:45. A bull, a big cow and what looked like a two year old cow.I chose the young one.

First shot I blew it , because of a poor rest. I reloaded and did the job the the second shot.

There is lot more to the story, but I can't hardly type now. 80 year old fingers don't work very well. So here is the cow, and camp.

TC Impact, 50 cal Muzzle Loader. 348 gr Powerbelt, 80 grains by volume of BH209 , about 125 yards. .Quartering away a bit and the exit was thru the off shoulder. Don't know why it bled so much on the entrance wound. She went about 20 yards

A good friend and outfitter packed it out for me.

Boom! Nice work Vince. It warms my heart to see you still in the game and successful at the young age of 80. Once again you venture into the high country elk woods and get it done. Congrats mister, job well done.

Wow. I’m inspired. I can tell you for sure I will not be killing elk when I’m 80. At 58 I’m already aching all over. I know you’ve had a tough toad lately Vince. Super happy to open this thread and see you knocked down yet another elk. With a smokepole! Hell yeah! Woohoo!

Vince is still kicking.

vince's cow elk is done kicking.

I love both of these facts.

Way to go Vince

My father-in-law took his last bull elk, desert bighorn at 79. His last goose at 85 and his last deer at 89.

Congrats Vince on a job well done. I am pleased for you.
I could not connect this season. The truth is that no one I hunted with or around even saw an elk. My son, his friend and I heard a few bugles, but nothing ever came of it. I got back late yesterday and took most of the day trying to clean up my hunting equipment. Soon I will get it back to where I can use it again.
