What did you do today to get ready for your 2023 Elk Hunt

Postby Elkhunttoo » 06 06, 2023 •  [Post 1]

The 2023 Elk hunting season will be upon us before we know it!!! What did you do today to get one step closer to be ready for your hunt?

Been running multiple miles every morning. I need to get the Bow out and start getting some arrows in a target!

Locking this topic on top. A good and timely thread EH2. Our elk hunting season is drawing near, much to do that will assist in our endeavors to bring an elk home for dinner (many dinners).

I actually got on to post on this thread and no one had started it. With around 80-85 days I figured it was time.

Ran again this morning…looking at tent possibilities for maybe a warmer wake up on cold fall mornings.

I am pleased that my shooting is coming along quite well. I need more work, but am on pace to shoot as well as ever by hunting season. I just ask the Lord to protect me from unforeseen problems.

I've been working on my daughter's house not that it takes so much time but it does take a lot of energy.
I'm trying to do a little bear hunting.
But I think I'm going to go pull my bow out of my hunting room and set it up and start shooting

After I get back from my hike, I plan to go purchase my deer and elk tags. I need to load a lot of coordinates onto my GPS. I need to get ready for a scouting trip.

Just got done with a 4 mile jog.

Might be going to the mountains camping with my son and nephew tonight. If so it will be a mini scouting trip. I still haven’t got my bow out yet. Around 75 days now and I will be in my stand :D

Okay, it has been kinda silent from ol' Tigger lately as I have been in Canada fishing and western NY for work. But I'm baaaaaa'aaack!

I listened to 2 of Elknut's podcasts. Got home last night from the airport at 1145 and I was ready right then and there to head west after listening to Paul for 2.5 hours. His enthusiasm is contagious! Great content. Just a good listen and I would highly recommend everyone but Swede listen to them. Doubtful Swede could understand the big words Paul uses. Like: BULL or ELK.

I had done my morning exercise and today the post office has notified me that my elk call diaphragms will be in my mailbox.
I am elated that Tigger learned something. As our senior apprentice he has a little difficulty there. He knows what elk are and he has learned what a bull is. He is hyped up and ready. :D

2.5 mi ruck this morning. Too blasted hot out. I am not a fan of summer heat!

Unrelated to elk hunting, but related to other hunting. I bought a new scattergun and shot it for the first time last night. Really like it and very happy with how I shot with it. Bead is a little smaller and I think I might like that. Safety is on the rear of the trigger guard...I don't like that. But all in all, I like it a lot so far. Oh, and I hit the first clay. That was important. Gotta hit the first one.

Cold and rainy here, mountain snow in the forecast. I cancelled my overnight trip that I'd planned for the weekend.

I am not elk hunting this year most likely. However I've been getting after the workouts in prep for August bear my most demanding hunt. Feeling good and strong, really want to get my pack on and get out in the mountains.

Not hunting elk this year? Blasphemy! (unless you have a very good reason). We will have to downgrade your WapitiTalk membership. You can expect to be the one who has to clean the WapitiTalk corporate jet and all the gooey things under the seats. You will need to carry our bags like incoming freshmen as well.

Exercise as usual and I shot my bow again today. I feel real good about my shooting again. I hit almost all bull's eyes (2 inch) at 20 yards and drawing my bow back seemed a lot easier. The one miss was off only a little and was due to a loose floppy fletch.

Hit Engineers Bluff on Ft Lewis after work with 30ish lbs of sand in my old Army Alice pack. Most uncomfortable pack in the world but I appreciate the suck as we get closer to elk 2023; I’m on to my usual 3-4 mile up and downs, 3-4 times per week with weight on my back, My personal regiment that I have found works for me.

Does a baby count? Due first week of October. There are no huntable elk within day trip distance of me, so I've resigned to the fact that I just won't elk hunt this year and that's ok. I'll help clean the jet, but not after Swede or IS use it, I'm putting my foot down.

No sniveling about the party jet 7mm. You should have plenty of time to clean it up since you are not going anywhere. You do not have to be right with your wife 24/7 until she delivers. You just have to stay close and be available. Best wishes to both of you and the new arrival. I don't remember if you will be getting a hunting partner or not.

That's the issue, there is no "close and available" elk option for me. I could bow hunt early September I suppose, but that interferes with bear hunting and fall salmon fishing. General rifle is in November, and honestly, I'm just not that excited about general season rifle hunting for elk in WA. It's either hunting spikes in well below objective units with thousands of friends, or hunting the rainforest in November. It's fine, I'm ok with it.

We are welcoming another boy into the world, so before long I'll have a ready made 2 legged pack string. However, a girl would have been treated just the same, we are an equal opportunity hunting household :D

I took 2 pain pills to hold me over until my Monday appointment with a spinal specialist to see if my severe sciatica is being caused by a herniated or ruptured disc. Been using a cane for two weeks and crawling around the house on my hands and knees. 11 weeks to my high country mule deer hunt… starting to get nervous.

Problems with your sciatic nerve are not good. I have a small problem there, but so far have been able to manage it by daily massaging it all down my leg. I roll a frozen water bottle under my foot for at least 20 minutes per day. You might try that. No guarantee, but it will keep your mind occupied for a while. Best wishes. Eleven weeks go by fast unless you are in pain.

I can’t put pressure on the bottom of my foot. Every step I take is like someone pushing a button on the nerve. My problem isn’t typing sciatica. It’s sciatic nerve symptoms caused by a disc problem pinching the nerve. I’m dying as we speak!

Joe, let us know what the doctor has to say and if he is much help. I will set you up a tree stand if that will help. I am not exactly a doctor  but I would recommend tree stand hunting for everyone to either protect their sciatic nerve, or to let it heal. :D

Ugh, I feel for ya mister. My sciatica issues are present, but nothing like you're going thru. Several years ago, when it first revealed its ugly head... I had two episodes within a week that put me down... felt like somebody was slicing my right leg open with a knife, from top to bottom...

2.04 mi ruck this morning. Yeah, i know! Quit yelling at me! I took the neighbor dog so I had to go a different route and the mosquitos formed a squadron and attacked mercilessly. I am down about a pint and a half of blood, but left a wake of dead mosquito kamikazes. Oh, and I shot my bow last night.

I finally had an MRI done today. I can hardly wait to see the results tomorrow. I’ll be relieved just to know what’s wrong. I have a high tolerance for pain but it’s bringing me to my knees! I don’t like taking pain pills but right now they are my life support system.

Tomorrow my new Schnee’s boots show up! I’m excited about that.

Granite 600. They came today. The new size fits great. No question the boots run small and narrow. They are less bulky than my Kenetreks were. I just ordered Freesole and Tuff Toe. I’ll run a bead of the glue around the top of the rand and also between the rand and the sole. After that dries I’ll apply the Tuff Toe to completely protect the front of the boots including the rand. It’s a $45 insurance policy. Everyone should do that instead of waiting until they need repairs.

Yet another day without idaho getting their draw results out…I think we need to inform them there are these new things called computer programs that can literally do that in a couple clicks of a button…I get taking a few days to go over it and make sure there are no errors. But it still takes them almost the same amount of time now as it did in the early 90’s.

I have 3 pair of the Beartooth which is just a bit lighter than the Granite. I love them to death. For Christmas, I bought one boy a pair of Granites and the other a pair of Beartooths (Bearteeth?). Ironically, both pairs are my size. I hope their feet grow!

I have the uninsulated. My feet rarely get cold. I would like a pair of the 600s for late season stand hunting and ice fishing. You will have to tell me how warm they are!

Ho-hum, another 2.5 ruck today. Went with a buddy. He didnt have his pack on and has a longer stride. Was a chore to keep up with him. It is nice having a partner to ruck with.

Losing a little weight. Gotta like that.

I tried the Stomach Flu weight loss program this week, to great success. Down 5# in the last 3 days! Got back on the horse today and did a full body weight workout, 10 minute core specific, and 20 minute HIIT bike ride. Wore me out, but I feel surprisingly good. Going on a death march hike tomorrow into one of my alpine bear spots to scout out a new approach. I should do about 10 miles tomorrow with about 4000' of elevation gain. Going to be a bruiser!

All of the work I did from February up until now messed up my back. But I also went from 205 to 185. So if I can get my back fixed the mule deer better run! If not they have nothing to worry about.

2.5 ruck. it is hot.

Now this last weekend. I did.....absolutely nothing elk related. I am almost embarrassed to say that, but I did do work on food plots for whitetail and pheasants.

Come on guys, it is now July and we have to start ramping this up. this thread should get hit a dozen times per day or more. Especially you guys like me who need to work out, let's get after it! We are roughly 60 days from having a wapiti on the 2023 meat pole!

More exercise and more shooting of my bow. My bow is starting to draw much easier. It seems like my bow pull loses poundage after I have pulled it back for over a month. The hanging bow scales would say it has stayed the same, but it feels easier. Today I am going to Winco to get some supplies for my scouting trip starting next Monday. Next week will be very busy and I need to prepare a lot this week.

2.0 today as I had to take the kids to their job.

57 here this morning and tomorrow morning is supposed to be 48. That is getting the fall juices flowing. Unfortunately, it is a tease as I am sure we have a lot of hot weather left.

Next week I am going on a week long scouting trip. For the last couple of days and today I have been placing scouting waypoints on my GPS. I have about 20 on there now and want to add about ten more. Some waypoints look really good from GE, OnX Maps and my maps, but they may be lousy. The others could be good or poor.
I am still shooting and exercising, which reminds me I better get going as it will get hot again today.

I got this place because it was the best statistically of the units I could draw as a second choice. I have never hunted any of it before. Hopefully I can find something that works.

Gotcha…hopefully your time spent looking at maps will pay off and you can find so good locations. Is the tag you will have for any elk or bull/cow only?

good news: 5.3 mi ruck last night. bad news: if you measured the elevation gain in inches and counted them on your fingers, you wouldn't have to use your thumbs! pancake flat RR bed. But 5.3 mi is 5.3 miles. 2.5 ruck this morning. no arrow flinging lately. gotta get on that.

Did my death march hike on Sunday with my Dad. Left the trailhead at 4:30 am, returned at 3:30. According to the GPS we covered 13.4 miles, and about 3500' of vertical. This is a bear hunting area for us about 4 miles back into the wilderness area. It's a long NE -SW running ridge with great exposure and is VERY steep. It loses snow earlier than most of the faces around it so it is the first to have berries come in. We have always taken the same route up to the top, and back out the same way. The reality of it is though, if we shoot anything down on the face it will likely roll down into one of the avalanche chutes, so Sunday we spent the day down on that face prowling the chutes, finding areas we can cross them, where to avoid, and making sure we could safely navigate all the way down to the bottom. It was a very informative and, calorie intensive hike. Side hilling in that country is absolutely brutal. The balls and sides of my feet were pretty hammered at the end of the day, but no blisters. Did it all with a 40# pack.

For the unit I drew it is either sex. It has a lot of hunters. I suspect the reason for so many is that the cattlemen don't want the elk competing for "their" forage.

It's basically the same Tigger, you're right. A steep climb is a steep climb, whether it's inches or significant portions of vertical miles.

Shot "lefty" from 40 yards last night. In February I switched to a left handed bow due to a shoulder issue.
So far so good. I still have alot of room for improvement but I didn't miss the target at 40 which is progress.
My wife sat outside with me while I shot. Our conversation lead to I'm going to kill a elk this year with a $225 used marketplace bow vs. my Mathews.

I worked today. Only for three hours but it’s the first time I’ve worked in 3 weeks. My MRI showed 4 bulged discs. Two bad enough to pinch the sciatic nerve.

Monday I had my first physical therapy appointment. They used traction therapy which stretches (decompresses) the spine. It was a very mild session since it was the first. But I noticed an immediate improvement. So I have been using my inversion table. There’s no question it’s helping. I have felt a little bit better each day. Last month I was living on pain pills. I haven’t taken one in five days. I’m pretty happy about this since I have only a little over two months till I hit the high country for mule deer. I have definitely been questioning whether I’ll even be able to do that hunt. But now I’m thinking I might make it. I won’t be able to give it 100% but at least I’ll be able to go there and call it a hunt.

Took the family and went up to the main spring I plan on sitting this year. I decided not to leave any trail cams up. I’ve struggled with bears destroying them In the summer. Cleaned a bunch of shooting lanes out. Enjoy a hot dog and s’mores with the family

Same battle man!!! So frustrating, thinking I’m doing great and then the scale tells me I’m not

another 2.5 ruck today.

Elkhunttoo, do you think our scales are off? Somebody messing with us? Dang, my legs feel like I have added muscle and are in great shape. But I would like to lose and inch or two around the mid section and that is just not responding. Kind of like that damn scale.

Ho-hum, another 2.5 ruck today.

Drop the banana and OJ for breakfast and switch to nonfat Greek yogurt with a little honey and granola and blue berries in it. Start your day with a punch of protein instead of carbs and your body will respond.

Covered about 12 miles in the mountains yesterday in the truck, 41 miles on the atv.

Had a pleasant surprise. The forest Service shortened the road to the trailhead by a mile.
Can't even tell that place use to hold 20 hunters in 4 or 5 camps.
Grass in that valley of nearly. 4 foot tall, and the cows fenced out.q

I am back from my five-day scouting trip. It will be an interesting area and season for sure. There are elk there and cattle and logging. All of this activity will be happening at once. I am not sure what to make of it all but will need to wait until the return trip for hunting to be sure.

Spent the last few days over where I used to hunt! Did a little scouting for Lefty. Definitely elk, saw a big group bedded just off the road. Just driving up the old hunting road for less than 4 miles we had 3 different bears that had been on the road. Reminds me every time why I quit hunting that area.

I ran into some fisherman. they left the willows pretty quick they got woofed at and left the area. I thought it was kind of entertaining, one person fishes, two stand guard for griz.

Thursday Friday and Saturday I was stomping around. I never found the location where I shot my first elk. I need to go back up and find exactly where I plan to set my blind,

there is a lot more backcountry deep steep hills and canyons than I remember.

Sure was nice, Stars were incredible,. I never felt the earth quake or see the northern lights

Spending time with the family before season is a important part of getting ready for elk season.

You are right. I just was not thinking correctly. I would skip elk season to be with them more. They are all busy and live separate from their mom and me.

Shot my bow again last night…feeling confident with the bow right now

Mainly practicing at 20-30 yards because that should be about my range this year from my stand…I will do some shooting out to 50 but shots should be in the 20-30 yard range

I ran for a little. I can hardly walk from the sciatic nerve issues. But I hit a ground wasp nest with the mower so I forgot about the pain for 3.7 seconds and did a 50 yard dash. I didn’t lose weight or anything but I did show myself what I’m capable of if push comes to shove.

One in the right hand, one on top of the left forearm, and one on the left elbow. I’ll consider myself lucky. Only three and nothing from the neck up. You forget how much that hurts until it happens again. Damnnn!!!

Joe, they advertise a band to go around your leg that puts pressure on the pain source for sciatic nerve issues. Have you considered it? If they are 1/2 as good as advertised, I might try one and I have no sciatic issues.

I did my hike again and shot my bow. I am feeling more comfortable with the bow every time I go out.

Brought my bow to the shop for a tune up. Havent had it tuned in a couple years. Timing and Cam alignment were both slightly off. 491 grains at 263 fps should do the trick. I am wondering what others shoot. I will put up a thread on that....

Even though I'm not elk hunting this year, I'm working hard. I started weight training 3-4 times/week about 2 months ago, and ride the stationary bike like heck on the in between days. I had lost about 10#, but have begun to add that weight back on in muscle mass, which I'm totally ok with. I'll be out of town on vacation for the first week of August and then will be hitting hills for bear immediately on my return.

My problem is more complex than that. The nerve is sending pain signals so that’s what needs treated. They’re doing a CT injection mid August to reduce the nerve inflammation right at the source. I just hope I can hunt in September.

Health issues suck pond water thru a dirty straw. Hoping the sawbones get a treatment plan dialed up to get you back to your normal, ornery, elk slaying self brother.

I generally agree that home remedies, tv gimmicks, and health junk advertised in magazines or online are poor at best. Your talented and well-educated doctor is better equipped to help you than you are to diagnose and treat yourself.
There are exceptions. I had two major operations to treat a urinary problem. They were costly and I was laid up weeks each time. Neither helped me much at all. I had injections from this same doctor until he finally he gave up. Then I saw an advertisement for a little gadget that changed everything. I have had it for about 18 years now and amazingly it works. This little gadget cost less than $20 bucks.

My brother has sciatic nerve problems that are severe. He gets cortisone shots that help only a little and for only a short time. For $30 he could try the advertised gadget.
Pond water and straws are cheap. When you run out of options, they may be worth a try. :D

Made sure I have some camera/phone holding gizmos assembled and ready to ship to anyone interested in adding one to their gear.

Reluctantly, I'll be sitting this season out...
Major rotor cuff surgery in late April to repair a 100% tare off the bone on left shoulder.
Right side tore 50%, so it will be end of next month or first of September.
This has been a challenging year on many levels...

Therefore, I' will be looking forward to others posting their "in the field memories" this season...

Work today…Heading out first thing in the morning to scout and put some trail cameras up in a spot I haven’t hunted much in the last few years…my brother in law had a few trail cameras in this area last year and they got hit fairly regular so we are probably going to put more emphasis in the area this year.

Went and set 4 trail cameras yesterday. Also got almost all of my stuff for my DIY tree saddle I’m putting together for a few spots this year in the mail. Messed with it a bit today and shot my bow out of it this evening.

The countdown is getting real people!!!! Where are you at???

Got the bow tuned. Shot last night....well I tried to. Pulled back my bow and my peep was twisted. So I went up to 10 yards and used the top of my peep as a guide and shot 16 arrows just for strength training really. Did learn something. Using the top of your peep at 10 yards makes you about 6-8 inches high. So if you ever have that happen in the field, the hunt is not completely lost.

I dont know if I can climb trees anymore,,, I certainly can't run.
So I purchased, and a drop leg holster for my Glock today

I have a buddy who shoots nearly everything with a pistol if the opportunity arises, I may do the same thing on some game. Im thinking of also getting some loads for grouse,,, loosing arrows on a grouse gets too expensive :o :o

With elk fever. real bad. So now I sit year worthless at work daydreaming about elk. And it is 100% your fault! I hope you are happy! :D

Those edge of the mountain roads, trails to the north will have elk on them in the evening. Take lots of pics

I straightened up the mess in my room Repacked some snow goose gear, rounded up all my archery clothes, washed a few items that needed to be washed, rearranges the arrows someone dumped out of their box,,,
Spent an hour and 1/2 looking at maps for my Idaho antelope and Montana combo hunt
I;; go shoot a few arrows shortly.

Im packing up for an escape trip to elk country, maybe one day, maybe two days . Still don't know if Ill be setting trail cams in Idaho , or looking for a place to put my blind during rifle season.
Fill a garbage can with wood chips to lay down at my deer blind location,,,

Fixed the dropleg holster for my right hand,. putting the sunshade and mirror on the ATV.
Otherwise, church clothes, sleeping gear, and food are minutes from out-the-door. 8-)

Took my three year old son to a bow shoot in the morning and followed it up by going on a five mile trail run with 1,300 feet of vertical climb in the afternoon. Sipping an ice cold beer post workout beer now and reading through various elk hunting forums. ‘Tis the season!

I plan to leave for camp on 8/28 for the 9/2 opener. I want to shoot my broadheads a few times and keep up the exercise, but most everything is packed and ready to load on the truck and trailer. I shot yesterday but won't shoot again until tomorrow.

]Sunday I was introduced to a former Outfitter and guide. I told him about the drainage and creek I was planning to hunt, which was where I killed my first elk over 30 years ago. He was pretty excited to do whatever he can for me, He use to run drop camps in both locations.

He also advised me to be very careful in the adjoining drainage, Seem the bears were causing problems. Checking that drainage I found 3 of the biologist's trail cams,,, so maybe I won't hunt there at all
I hadn't been in the area in 24(?) years. The grass was taller, found lots of wild rye over 6 feet tall, and filled my socks and boots with weed seed. Lost my phone ( found it in a washout:shock: ) Then got caught in the sleet for nearly 30 minutes.
Lots of fresh elk sign
I believe I found where I'll be spending the night before the  season

I killed my first elk with the suggestion of a fellow who used to hold the world record for elk( Killed in Russia). His last year's elk hunting was sitting 25 feet off of an ATV trail in a cheap lawn chair.... Now that I say that I bet that chair is still up there!
My last two deer were killed by a pop-up blind. I believe I posted the pic of the 6x6 that walked out in front of me this year.

More exercise and map work. I am having a tough time deciding where to hunt. I will need to wait until I get back to my hunting unit to make a final decision. There are three more tree stand locations I want to check out. After that it will be time to set up.

I guess I should have read this one before I put my last post on the tree stand thread Swede.

I finished my camera boxes last night and my kids are painting them today while I’m at work.

Three of us heading in at daylight tomorrow to work on stands, check cameras, put cameras up, and look for a new wallow/spring we think exists that we haven’t searched the area very good yet.

Another day, another 2 mi ruck. This time however, the dang neighbors dog was playing with my dog and tripped me up. I fell down in a tangle of arms, legs, dog legs, and my backpack. Nothing hurt buy my pride from falling down on level ground. However, tangled up in dogs while trying not to step on them is a fairly good excuse!

Just got back from my last scouting trip for the year. My brother in law found a really nice wallow about 200 yards from a spring I found deer hunting last year. Got a bunch of trail cameras up…got all the tree stands up, and messed with our tree saddles for the first time in the woods…we are ready to roll

Today I got a CT injection. One cc of steroid directly on to the L5 nerve in my lower back which is causing my problems. The procedure didn’t go so well. I got extremely lightheaded nearly passed out, nearly puked, then broke out in cold sweats and shivering. Eventually I pushed through that. I hoped that was worth it, but today I have to say all it did was take my pain from about a six to a two in my ankle. Nothing else changed still having toe drop and limping I hoped I was going to feel like 1 million bucks this morning but no luck. Mule deer hunt is fast approaching.

Joe, I am no doctor, but I would prescribe a good comfortable tree stand for you. You probably have one or two that would be a perfect fit near a western waterhole.

Today I did the normal stuff and added filling my propane tanks. Wednesday, I had my colonoscopy. It went very well. Praise the Lord. I had an EKG, and they said my heart is in great shape. I have a relaxed pulse of 55 bpm. PTL. I think it will do me good to continue my exercise program. And some of you characters thought I had no heart. :D

Ordered my climbing sticks for my tree saddle.

Went through most of my hunting stuff and started organizing everything into its proper place. Got all of my clothes out and so they are ready to get washed. Texted the group about a few things.

Now I’m heading out to shoot my bow.

I had it into town I need to figure out what's up with the heat on my RV furnace.

The diagnosis I've come up with is a bad gas diaphragm regulator, and/or a sailor switch

Otherwise killing time in the rain.

Lefty not sure what your furnace issue are but.
I’m sure you have gas on , checked gas to furnace by loosening connection.
Sometimes a little dirt gets in orifice ,sometimes tapping it helps to loosen dirt
One year I found a mouse nest behind heater that stopped fan from turning, prehunt thankfully
Good luck with it.

The furnace is working better, but still not correctly. I'm taking a Buddy heater for my late-season hunt as backup and a couple of down bags. I worried it is the electronic board for the whole RV.

I ordered a new gas regulator, the furnace and either the water heater or refrigerator: two appliances were not receiving enough gas for the furnace to run.

Today I am getting ready for my next hunts, cleaning out my camper, and Washing all my "hunting clothes" Time to pack up the cold weather hunt gear, and winterizing the water system

Not fun , so I’ve installed 3 of the “ Chinese diesal heaters” ( 1 in my van , 1 in camper and 1 in friends van) I like them a lot($200 on Amazon)
Van i take skiing for weekends and makes it enjoyable, camper ( still have propane heater for back up) installed with heater duct lines to shower rm for drying wet clothes and to main compartment. On low about 24 hours per gallon. Plus remote for turning on from bunk on cold mornings
Good luck on getting it figured out.

So what I did to get ready for the 2023 elk season , caution this training method is not for everyone.
1. Spent winter and spring backcountry skiing , including Mt st Helen’s and Mt Adams and areas around Mt Rainer
2.Mt bike riding couple times a week 16-20 miles a ride
3 trail riding my 450 duel sport ,had a 30 mile loop around Capital forest, about once a week.
4. No hiking or backpacking to speak off
Ok this is where it gets tough.
A week before hunting run your dirt bike off trail and spend a few hours trying to get the 275 lb machine back on trail by yourself. Then make sure you schedule a colonoscopy for the day before you have to leave for elk camp. This will make sure you have no energy, fasting for a day, dehydrated and just not feeling like hiking 5 miles.
So the plan I made change to just hunting a few areas. More sitting and calling the first few days. Which I was lucky enough to have paid off with my 3x3.
As I feel I’m in pretty good shape for my age. Make sure to use up that insurance and get your testing done before the season

Camper is all loaded for Montana in 11 days. Food, clothes.
Need to go through the meat box,,, Need to find what I did with my knife after gutting the antelope. Tomorrow off to set up my blind for Idaho deer .
SE Idaho wintering deer got hit hard in March. And I have a few projects around home that need to be done before Thanksgiving, So maybe its wet and miserable Tues I just might not wait on a mature buck.

Today I pulled camp and dropped 1,500 ft in elevation.

I don't want my camper there until spring.

Where I am camped at 6800. Last year the other group of 5 spent most of their hunt trying to get out of their high-elevation camp.

the property we hunt snow geese, that fellow passed in the Montana backcountry when he didnt make it out.

Re: What did you do today to get ready for your 2023 Elk Hunt

Or maybe not

I always expected , putting a lot of time I would still fill the freezer. Tomorrow will likely be my last trip to Montana.
Basically laundry, food, and gas.

18 days of Montana hunting so far :? I was planning on holding out for a mature bull,,, I may need to shoot a cow,,,,if I see one
