2023 meat pole

Postby wawhitey » 02 08, 2023 •  [Post 1]

This is the place to share your pictures (and brief story if you wish) of your 2023 Big (or small) Game harvests. Whether they're taken with bow, rifle, muzzle loader, shotgun, hand cannon, spear, or the Five Point Exploding Heart Technique, let's see your 2023 harvests!

The previous year meat poles are all located in the Archived Tips section if you wish to view them.

Another rushed shot on a runner today. Really wish these jerks would just hold still every once in a while.

Well, headed back to idaho this afternoon for round 2 of bear hunting. Just as i was going to stop glassing for the day i spotted a bear a mile away. Doubletimed it over there, started calling, anyway long story short i called her in with daylight waning and dropped her. Didnt think it was big, but man when i walked up on her she was really small. Very young bear. Wish i had kept my trigger finger in check. Cant take em back once you send em though.

Wont be going for another in idaho this year. Heading up to the arctic in a week. Should get back the last week of july, just in time for the washington bear opener. Ill have the whole month of august off, prime time for bear, so im going to try my best to be discriminating in what i shoot. I dont feel the need to kill big trophy bears, but definitely dont want to take any young, juvenile bears. No issues with killing a sow thats old and mature. But of course big boars are preferred. I shooed away a number of clearly young bears in wa last fall and got a couple old sows. Going to be extra careful this time around. Funny thing about this little sow yesterday, pretty much the same place i killed my biggest bear ever last spring. I guess it kinda evens out

Nice sow down today. Maybe 7yrs old im guessing. Man, first time shooting this thing without earplugs with the suppressor on it. SO much better, my ears arent ringing. The 3 years i used this gun with a brake did some damage to my hearing im sure.

Didnt call in either of my fall bears this year. Got them both just sneaking through the woods, using my ears more than my feet. Been such bad crazy erratic wind all week ive only called a few times. Dont want to risk calling in unruly wind, just educate things that way.

Just having the hides tanned, and hang em on a nail by the nose. I have plenty of bear taxidermy, and really i dont feel any need for more hides either, but it just seems wrong to throw them away for some reason, even though i have no problem throwing out deer hides. Dont know why its different, but it is. Bear hunting for me is really just about the meat, and i also really like the skulls, but the hides i now just keep because i feel like id be doing something wrong by dumping them. So ill keep getting my bear hides tanned, and eventually ill be buried in them.

Oh ive taken a few toilet seat cover bears myself. Infact, just scroll up near the top of this thread to see my idaho springer this year, dinkiest bear ive ever killed. Oops. Man was i embarrassed getting the hide sealed. As if people in idaho need more reasons to talk smack about washington hunters.

Called this 3 pt in on 9/11. Solo hunt in the PNW. Set up to do some cold calling at 11am.he came running into 30yds almost before I finished sequence. He didn’t make a pip , but ran in like he meant business. No time for range finder, estimated range and let her fly , heard load WHACK , thought I had over shot and hit tree. No that was broad head hitting and going through opposite shoulder blade. Shuttle T broad head launched from Mathew’s DXT did its job. Found him 20 yards from shot

My dad and I just got back from our DIY trip. Went for 1.5 weeks of archery, then 1 week of rifle. We were into bugling bulls every day during archery, had a couple close calls, but no arrows slung. I was able to tag a small bull opening day of rifle, and my dad a few days later.

Both were our first bulls. My dad's first elk. Maybe not what most would consider "trophy bulls" but they will eat good, and a lot of good memories that can't be replaced.
