YOU MIGHT BE AN ELK HUNTER, IF?........

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 03 29, 2022 •  [Post 1]

Sung to the tune of Jeff Foxworthy’s “you might be a redneck, if”, only this thread is about those often enormous but sometimes subtle indicators that indicate that you may in fact, be an elk hunter. I’ll get this rolling.

You might be an elk hunter if you stop in your tracks when a screen door squeaking sounds like a cow mew.

True story: You might be an elk hunter if you smell elk when you’re at work in Pennsylvania. There are certain kinds of wood that, when they get wet and sit outside smell just like a stinky wallow. I must look funny at work with my nose in the air sniffing left and right!

You might be an elk hunter if you hear cow elk sounds from puppies! We have 4 new lab puppies that are 3 weeks old right now. They can make far better cow elk mews that anybody I know!

You might be an elk hunter if you are looking forward to your next elk hunt within a week of returning from your latest.
You might be an elk hunter if your wife asks, is this a place you want to scout for elk, when you suggest going somewhere for a vacation.

You might be an archery elk hunter if you have missed your last 15 wedding anniversaries because you made the dumb decision to get married during the 2nd week of September.

The month was dumb.....not the getting married.

My wife and I married September 14, 1968. I have been off hunting for many of our anniversaries. At least I warned her that I was a hunter and always planned to be.

My wife was so anxious to get married.. Bought a non-resident trapping license and trapped on our honeymoon . We've spent a a few anniversaries duck and goose hunting

When you return home from a hunt your wife ask, " What did you get " ? instead of " Did you get anything " !!!!

Before we got married, I told my wife I was an elk hunter and after we were married, she could never complain about me going elk hunting. That was 45 years ago,and nary a complaint. Now that my hunting days are winding down, she gets mad if I don't go.She claims that is her vacation

The month was dumb.....not the getting married.

They can be celebrated together!! My mom often came up to deer camp, during my parents November anniversary. My dad claimed anniversary month, All those nice anniversary things before he went to camp for 10 days :D
Just think of all the cool anniversary gifts,, Bigger wall tent, New stove, new ATV, new RV
My wife and I were married in December, Part of our honeymoon,, I ran few traps for kit fox and bobcat in southern California. . Many of out anniversaries were in part in the duck blind, goose pit or hunt together.

My father in law had it figured out: 65 consecutive years they stayed one night each year in Yellowstone Lodge, September , 11th. He would often get home and was packed for a hunt,

Well you likely have it figured out if you've been able to miss 15 years

At least I made it home for our 50th anniversary. Of course, my elk tag was filled. :D
You just might be an elk hunter if you are as excited to go out on the last afternoon of the season as you were one the first morning. You might also be an elk hunter if you kill your elk in the last hour of the last day of your month-long hunt. You might be an elk hunter if you return home empty handed satisfied you did everything you should have done to be successful.

Not to me. That I did everything I should have does not mean "success". You see, I fail sometimes.

You get covid pre-vac and try to hunt elk anyway, walk 50 yards into the woods and have to sit down. Meanwhile, your vision is so blurry if an elk stepped out could you even hit it? Then it takes three days of this for you to realize it was a dumb idea.
