I dare you.

Postby Jhg » 02 09, 2022 •  [Post 1]

We all like seeing pictures. I dare you to take more photographs while on your hunts this year. Pictures of camp. Pictures of your view from a sit spot or glassing point. Rubs and wallows and game trails, oh my!

Take photos of anything you find of interest or beautiful. Snow squalls, rain storms. Hail. Frosty tipped meadows. Moonrise, sunset, sunrise.
Anything. Bonus points of course for elk on the ground shots.

Then, tell us about your hunt. I dare you.
Swede? Swede?

Funny thing is that the "seasoned" hunters I know (including myself) never carried a camera back in the day. I did start carrying one of plastic, disposable instamatics around the mid/late 80s? At one point over the years, Mrs. Wapiti threw out a drawer of them that I never took in and had developed. Modern day, there's certainly no reason not to have a camera in the pack (I have a Canon Elph I think its called). Also, pretty sure most everyone has a smart phone (although I normally don't carry it in the pack). Anyways, good thread Jhg; pics of the camp, hunt, and God willing and the creeks don't rise, a harvest are sure nice to have and share.

I have about 8 scrapbooks of prints, dating back to the mid sixties, I took of hunting trips when every one used film. When digital came into being, I started that. I have gone thru 3 cameras since.
I have the images on cd's and USB drives, but also have them on my computer as a slide show. It takes about 30 minutes to cycle thru, with each image up less than 10 seconds. Each hunt is in a separate folder by location and date of hunt.
In my mind, I seldom remember each hunt, but when one of those photos cycle thru, can remember exactly where it was taken.

My wife was a wildlife photographer for 8-10 years and she has 4 each , 4 drawer file cabinets filled with slides of different wildlife, mostly elk in Yellowstone, but a bunch of the Polar Bears in Manitoba and penguins/seals in Antarctica. I have no clue as to the number of digital images she has.

Point taken. I have never been much into taking pictures. I am not very good at seeing picture opportunities. When a great photo chance comes around, I never have my camera. It is funny in a way that I have no pictures of many elk I have killed. I did not even own a camera when I killed my largest bull, and I do not have anything but a memory of it. I knew nothing of B&C so all I can say is it was a 6X6 herd bull. Many others have come and gone and are just a distant memory. I have kept record over the past 30 years so I can go back in my mind and revisit them every now and again.
I hope to do better this year as I have a good little camera. So, there is no real excuse not to have pictures. Maybe I will win the monthly photo contests. :D

I seem to have a knack for finding frogs.

I have always enjoyed photography, and in particular outdoor photography. I think because the things we see when we are out in the woods are things that the majority of our peers never get to see. It is also a challenge to get a well shot outdoor photo as almost everything is against you, much like hunting. I used to take them for my own memory and enjoyment, and now I take them primarily to show my son. He is 4 and loves to sit on my lap at my computer and scroll through the thousands of photos that I have saved. I try to take pictures of things that I think he will be interested in now. Less landscapes and sunsets/sunrises and more of little critters and bugs, hence the frog photos up above. We spend a lot of time looking at google earth and maps as well, and showing him what places that I've taken pictures of look like on maps.

The smartphone is easier than a camera. Its thin so you can have it in a pocket ready to go but it does not feel cumbersome. Since I started taking my phone I take way more photos and of course they are forum ready as soon as you have a connection.
I never took hero pics either and do not have many for the animals I have gotten- a moose, bunch of whitetails, elk.

Remember to revisit the photo tips thread to make your pictures even better!

I have greatly upped my picture taking quantity and quality over the years. I put them in The Man Book, which is a collection of pictures and articles from our trips.

If Swede didn't take pictures of all of those "supposed" elk he shot, do we actually believe him? I think maybe all that nonsense he spews forth is just a regurgitation from something he read and he may not have ever even hunted elk. Something to ponder on....

I can't reveal my sources... but its said Swede has not killed any elk with a bow. What he actually kills them with is a spear. He has a loin cloth and sometimes even chases them down.

I almost looked like Tarzan once, then I woke up and the image was gone.
