Late Season(s)?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 11 23, 2021 •  [Post 1]

So campers, who’s still got some big game hunting to do? I know many states have some late season hunts offered. In WA, we have late ML elk, late deer ML and archery starting tomorrow. I’ll be out and about for some freezer filler critters. How about you cats?

Nada. A very slight possibility that I might sight in my muzzleloader and go for whitetails, but we have enough meat. So I will focus on pheasants. Good news is, they are really up in numbers this year.

I have an ag tag that runs thru Jan 31 for elk but its an urban tag, really, so doesn't count. Get up, drive to farmer Johns field, shoot elk. Not exactly a hunt by our standards.
I am done but for pheasants.

Lion hunting for me. Today was day 1. Taking tomorrow off for turkey day, then going all out to get a big cat. On my hike back to the truck today, got back to the road almost to my truck, and there were lion tracks crossing my backtrail. Upon further investigation, i decided the tracks were from early morning. Must have just missed him on my hike in. Shoulda hit the snooze a few times this morning!

After all the time ive spent lion hunting, i decided i wanted to be able to really see how many miles, on foot and tire, plus how many hours actually calling, it takes me to get a cat. So i started my lion hunting log today and ill keep it up indefinitely. Logging times at each stand, type of calling, etc etc, and miles hiked and driven. Anything relevant really. Tracks cut, all that stuff.

I have no late season hunts. I am e-scouting and thinking about 2022. Oregon has changed things that I think will ultimately help, but for the next year will be harder to navigate as I have no idea how to best manage my preference points.

Well the goose pit is in.
Even got a text up on the mountains for a Friday and Saturday goose hunt.

Sunday night Ill head back up,, still a muzzloader season for elk , ,

Lion quotas seem to fill before I get a chance.
Yesterday a rancher found out I was a trapper and wants me to trap wolves in his pasture . I saved him bigger problems today. I thought it was his wife who was messing with a gate and needed help,,,, As I started to park the gal ran back to her car(cali plates).

I may chase roosters this Saturday after a goose hunt.

Well, warming up, raining, snow is melting off fast. Lion calling weather is done. Need a white background to see them sneaky suckers coming in. Supposedly its going to be real rainy through tuesday, then unseasonably warm for a while. Since the weather is going to be so springlike, i figure what better way to kill time waiting for proper winter lion weather, than to climb up into my elk stand with a bow? This unhunted (at least in this area) herd moves through here sporadically year round. I have 5 different bulls roaming through there. The one i want is not the biggest one, its this goofball. His antlers were like this last year too.

Your bull is in excellent shape. Apparently the rut did not take a lot out of him. Hopefully he comes through the winter in great shape.

That pic is late august. But all the same i have 5 bulls here regularly for the last couple years. All months of the year. Ill take any one gladly, from the 4x4 to the 7x6. Just bought my elk tag today, and ive been practicing with my bow in my back yard and oddly enough im shooting better than i ever have, despite having not shot all year. Feeling pretty good about my prospects right now. Just need luck to be on my side for wind etc, and to have any one of those bulls pass by my stand. Sometimes its elkfest there, sometimes nothing for a month.
But im feeling pretty optimistic.

My mistake. I did not look at the foot note on the picture. No wonder he looks so fat. I still hope he comes through the winter ahead in great shape.

No, he would look good in your freezer. He looks great in the picture. I hope he is still nice and fat.

Theres also this guy, a 5x6, a 5x5 and a 4x4 using that area. I just need to luck out and have one cruise through and have a favorable wind.

Ahhhh. Anticipation!

In your truck bed....If I remember correctly, you had a tonneau cover on that new buggy. Or did you put a topper on it? I have a topper and every day I try and tell someone how much I love my topper. It is awesome.

How are you going to get to your tree stand if there is an elk already there?

Never had a tonneau cover. Got my canopy finally, right before thanksgiving, after a 6 month wait. Camping in style now. That cow was talking at 350am. Doesnt get shooting light until 7. Im going to wait until shooting light to sneak the 400 easy yards to my stand, just in case.

Did you build a little bunk to sleep on? I have been looking at them on Al Gore's internet. Pretty cool ideas out there. They make 400W 110v heaters you can plug into your truck too to take the chill off.

By the way, it is light here. The sun is racing towards you. I would guess it is over central North Dakota about now.

No bunk, just a bedrug bed mat and a 4" memory foam. I keep it simple.
