ELKTEMBER is upon us!

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 09 01, 2021 •  [Post 1]

Here we go, It's getting to be that time again. The bulls are getting a bit "twitchy", with many of them leaving the security of their remote bachelor pads to go see what the gals have been up to this past year. To all of you who are grabbing their bow and departing for the September elk woods, I wish you all safe travels and the best of luck as you attempt to bring an elk home for dinner over the next four weeks. I'll be pulling out a week from this Saturday.

Rolling out in 20 minutes. Hunting locations A, B and C marked on Google Earth to help my wife worry less. May God Bless each of you with a successful season and a safe return home.

All the Best,

Laundry day for me! I go to extreme measures to be as scent-free on day 7 as I am on day 1. Then I rub a little cow pee behind my ears.

God I love this time of the year.

My goal every elk hunting season is to come back home to my family.....everything else is a bonus. GRATITUDE!

AHHHH! You guys are killing me! Taking a forced year off from archery elk is killing me! KILLING ME I SAY! You jerks better feed me some content...pictures, stories, sounds, tastes, whatever, but I will need a fix. Daily.

Swede is out hunting now and we have gotten nothing from him! Swede is getting multiple demerits per day for not checking in.

Best of luck to all you knuckledraggers! Enjoy your time afield, relish the little moments, take lots of pictures and take no chances in the backcountry!

I'm still 30.7 days from departure. good luck to those of you who will be hunting sooner!

Headed into the field tomorrow (finally)! Pack is right at 32 lbs - I am hoping to cover a lot of ground to both get to know it, but also looking for sign and hopefully hearing bugles in the woods! Hope everyone is enjoying this time of year and how lucky we are to get to go out and chase animals in God’s Country!

What are you guys (and gal) seeing in the field in terms of elevation of sign. I have put 45 miles on the ground in the last three days and have checked from 3,500’ to 8,500’ over six different spots and I have see zero sign. Just wondering if there is something simple that I am missing.

We returned from out trip Friday night. Our group killed a cow, missed a bull, and were in elk every day. With the heat and persistent dryness, we saw hardly any sign at all below 8,500. Bulls were bugling/chuckling, but were really tough to close the last 150 yds on.

Funny enough, I got into bulls and cows today. They were at 4,000’ and came off private into some National Forest that is landlocked - I watched the main group pass by at 100 yard and I put a stalk on three cows but didn’t end up getting a shot. This evening there were three bulls bugling their heads off. Back to the same spot tomorrow morning and hopefully they change their morning path and cruise right through the public.
