Postby Lefty » 06 04, 2021 •  [Post 1]

Did you do anything this week for upcoming season?

When I get home I'll round up any gear., clean, and wash if needed!
I plan to harvest some sage brush, I Iove that smell ! And add it to my storage bins..
And pull out my bow and start summer shooting.

Been starting to shoot the bow a bit. Of course, working on conditioning as much as possible; heading to the neighbor state to do some trail clearing and dropping some cams in the elk holes 2nd week in July. Cripes! That’s right around the corner.

No. The answer is no. No ID tags, no MT tags, NO WY TAGS. I'm relinquished to WA OTC tag most likely so I'll likely just be deer and bear hunting.

I shoot year-round but have been tweaking my arrow setup, shooting from random distances, from kneeling, with obstacles, with a pack, etc.. Just got an Ultimate Predator Decoy so I will start shooting with that attached.

June is the month when I really step up my training intensity and doing more hiking with a heavy pack.

My elk calls are sitting on my desk at home so I spend more time than I should admit practicing calling during Zoom meetings with my video off and my audio muted.

Summer scouting trip is booked for July so doing a lot of e-scouting to plan out that trip because we're hunting a different area this year.

I need to start shooting soon. I have been keeping up my physical conditioning. The Oregon draw results are coming out this month so, I will soon have a better idea what I am conditioning for.

Put in for my Idaho draw tags. If I draw I use the rifle if not I’ll be slinging arrows. It’s really a win win. The chances of drawing are super slim so I will just plan on slinging arrows :D

yep, i raised my left arm (with my right arm assisting) to 119 degrees from vertical! Without my right arm, I am at about 45 degrees. Tried to pick up my shotgun the other day.....nope. couldn't move it more than an inch. Still a long ways to go though!

I had my right shoulder replaced in Dec. 2018. 6 months before I could say it was usable in a fashion, 85% ROM, but not much strength to it. First year self PT after 3 months of professional, everyday. Next year self PT every other day.Almost 2.5 years out now, ROM about 90%. I can pick up about 25pounds, but not over my head.

I have high hopes! I talked to a roofer the other day who had the same surgery by the same surgeon I used. He was just over 5 months from surgery and almost 100% recovered! He was on a roof shingling when I was talking to him and he looked like he was doing fine!

Not a thing. I just closed on a new base camp (house) and have been buried in the whole process of that and moving in. Still no scope on my gun. This year is flying by like an elk that just busted a still hunter and headed for the next county!

Hope you gave a great transition into your new digs mister. Still laughing about the “elk that busted a still hunter and are on their way to the next county”. And why don’t you gave a scope on your gun? That’s just wrong.

I dont have a scope on my gun either. Just got a new one that my daughter is going to use this fall for her first ever elk hunt. I now have the scope and just need to put it on.

Just anxiously waiting on Washington's draws to see if I get a tag worth hunting. If not, I'll be focusing on deer and bear this year and if time allows, I may go for a hike in elk woods with the rest of the orange army looking for unicorns.

I've been working out a lot, down 15# and feel good. Getting home projects out of the way and hoping to enjoy my summer this year instead of slaving on the house like the last few years. July is usually my hiking/scouting month but it's pretty much spoken for by trips and out of town family coming in.

Well been riding my mtn bike 2-3 times a week since March( ski season was winding down) I have a couple of loops up to 18 miles , 2500’ gain. That loop has 11 miles of uphill, come to find out the hard way , so it’s a double workout, I get a mental workout out as well. I’ll start backpacking in a few areas I plan to hunt in the coming months

I'm headed out to scout July 2nd! I'd leave earlier but my bed is being delivered then.
I'm also trying on my hunting gear! I've never worn gaters, will see if they'll even fit! My legs are 28" everything has to be shortened.
My new rifle is shooting 2,575-2600 fps. Not bad for scirocco 308 165 grain,1/2" groups at 200 yards!
I paid $32, 2 yrs ago for these bullets now there $80. I have 45 bullets, still need to practice shooting, it's 6lbs lighter than my Remington. Looking forward to breath taking scenery!
I love being there!
If you can't find me, I'm not lost. I'm hunting!

I saw a lone cow elk out on my hike this morning. That helped spur me on to pick up my bow this afternoon. It was the first time I have shot it since last September. I was a little shaky, but it was good over all. I hope to tighten my groups up some. I expect to be shooting on a regular basis from now on until the elk season starts. I hope to find out real soon if I got any special tags.

Been on a tear with the workouts for the past three months. Doing a lot of heavy backpack step ups since there's no vertical around here. Shooting the bow daily...

I've gained 30 lbs (mostly muscle) in the past year, recovered completely from my surgeries now, and I'm feeling healthier than I have in 10-12 years. I'm finally back to what I weighed in High School when I was playing baseball.

The Oregon draw results are out now. I did not draw any special deer or elk tag. I will chalk it up as another charitable contribution. In the meantime I am still hiking and now am back into shooting my bow. At least the shooting is progressing well and I am maintaining with my exercise.

Sorry to hear your luck was poor in the draw Swede. I have a feeling you've got plenty of contingency plans. God luck this fall!

I shot a tournament this past weekend with my recurve and feel very confident in my setup and abilities this fall. September can hurry up and get here as far as I'm concerned. Basically just need to finish food prep and restock on essentials. Other than that, I'm ready.

Bear season is still on, but my bear is in the freezer and Im working the hide . Have a buddy working off my bait, so I may run up and haul more bait in for him Wednesday.

All my gear is ready,, see how how the week goes maybe do a one night pack in and fish trip

I am already noticing that my shooting pattern is tightening up after only being out four times. I expect to continue shooting until the season opens. Things should continue to improve for awhile. I hope the elk appreciate my practice. After all, it is just for them. Right now I need to head out for my morning walk.

I have a chair. I step up on said chair, then back down, hundreds and hundreds of times. It sucks.

How many days left for everyone? Drive day for me is 48 or 49 days away. I'm technically not hunting elk in September, but if I fill my CO mule deer tag early enough in the trip I have spousal permission to go snatch an OTC tag and keep hunting. Bambi better watch out  .

Been shooting the Darton pretty consistently. Buddy swung out with our tentage to set up (got a smaller than our usual large wall tent) to add to our inventory. I cut up the poles last night for our new Montana Wall Tent shop 10x12. Very easy to set up/take down. It’ll do just fine for shorter late season hunts. Off to scout out SW Idaho spot (controlled tag) in a few weeks. It’s getting closer……. ;)

I hope not. That is my plan. Cow or bull is fine with me and I do not plan to pack for miles either. I found a nice flat area with a great waterhole. It is under 200 yards from where I can park my truck. It is perfect for me. I just need a cooperative elk.

Feeling it a little today, but not bad. I will be intensifying workouts until we leave. No more beer until we are celebrating a kill. 53 days until we are westbound and down!

Hiked after work as usual. Shot a handful of arrows; as usual, the Darton shoots shoots great.

Picked up my bow and shot it last night. Good out to 30 yards. Put a light load in my new pack and walked about 1.5 miles. Getting a late start but it is what it is.

There are just 32 days before it is time to head to camp. I have some more shooting and hiking to do to get ready, but feel confident everything will be ready on time. I just hope the elk are as excited as I am about the season opening again.

Well, I messed up my calf yesterday. Lets just say military press in an office chair is a bad idea.

I dodged a bullet though, and the swelling is already subsided and I should be able to walk normal in a couple days. So I'm double checking batteries are fresh, I've gotten most of my food dehydrated, arrows are all fletched, broadheads are sharpened. I'm shooting daily out to 20, and a couple times a week at 30-40 yards with the recurve. No elk tag, but I'm going after CO mule deer in a month.

I pulled a bow back! Yahoo! Well, it was a kids bow set to 20 lbs, but it was a bow and the shoulder held up fine. I could probably get close to 30 lbs.

been hiking a fair amount. I am at 14 miles so far in August. Legs are starting to toughen up. Going scouting in two weeks. Really looking forward to that.

Keep up the good rehab work Tig. You will get there. I have been hiking and shooting. I went on a short vacation with the family and ate too much so I have a couple of pounds to take off. Other than that I am mostly waiting and hoping this fire situation does not get worse.

Been shooting most nights. I think all my potential elk clothing is together and soon will soaking in sage brush.
one more load of camo in silver wash!
Need to order new boots
While working on the wash I realized My pack had not been cleaned, Its been on bear elk, coyote and goose hunts since last season,,, found a package of forgotten diaphragm calls, a cover on wind check had opened so the one pocket was white powder,,, Pack dirtly and likely stinky.

Need to check the wind check are they full, and are they all together?

Glad to hear you're getting healed up Tigger!

I ordered new batteries for my rangefinder yesterday, and a pair of leather gloves. Still need to swing by REI or Academy and pick up some fuel cannisters for my stove. Also need to see about tweaking the tune on my bow. I'm not happy with harrow flight when I hook the string my preferred way. I can tune it out out by paying attention to finger pressure on the string, but that's annoying. Gonna bump up my nock point and see if it cleans it up without changing my gaps too much.

Dwarf, be sure to check your arrow. If everything there is not right, then moving the nock will not fix your arrow flight.

It's a nocking point issue. Bareshafts fly straight when I hook the string one way. Nock low the other. So I can tune my hand, or I can tune the bow. I had the whole setup shooting bareshafts and broadheads beautifully, then I decided to work on how I grab the string. Found something that feels better (and truthfully, shoots better, even with arrow flight problems).

I never thought about how changing your finger placement would effectively change your nocking point, but after thinking about it, I can see how it would matter. Anyway it seems you may have an easy solution to your problem. Moving a nocking point is a lot cheaper than buying new arrows.

Yep, I adjusted my nocking point a bit and I'm back in business. My tied on nock points had drifted on me, and I was out of spec for my normal tune.

Getting real excited for the season! Decided to remodel the kitchen at the last minute 4 weeks ago and I am finally on the tail end, so it’s back to triple checking my gear and ordering new items I may or may not need.

I shot my bow this morning at 40 yards. I finally feel my pattern is about as good as it gets and I am holding well. I was starting to worry I may have to shorten my shooting range on game, but feel better now. Buster bull better not taunt me at 40 yards now.

I just got back from Costco; I certainly didn't buy what I was planning to purchase for the house and bar.n I ended up purchasing food for elk hunting nearly everything was on sale. I still had a $218 bill. By the time I got home my wife had called wondering what I'd spent so much money on. I generally dont buy bottle water. We have very good well water. But it was on sale.
I dont drink the Purified, ionized, flavor added stuff , I want spring water. Ill just add water to our food storage.
Ill just need fresh fruit and veggies and I really am ready.

Swede I wasnt sure what kind of chili you prefer so I bought Nall

Nalley is good Dennis. I can't handle Stagg's Two Bean Chili. You need to get plenty of tortilla chips to go with those frijoles.
I shot again this morning and keep checking everything. I am about ready to go also.

Here are the beans I will be taking to camp. Like Dennis' they came from Costco, but were in a 20# sack. They will be frozen and placed in the cooler. I also have Nalley Original Chili for later consumption.

Well Swede maybe we should take the bean recipe to the cooking forum.
Ive never frozen beans,, so it must work, I do have some extras from my 10 can mix about a week ago.

I love my wife: but I just wish she would leave what I have where I have it. She put my camo rain gear and my two small underwear and sock bags "away" They were clean! but she put my long underwear away. ( I was drying them on the bed of her sewing room :?

It is a very simple recipe. 4 1/2 cups of pinto beans, 1 teaspoon salt, fill 6 qt. pot the rest of the way with water. cook until done with the slow cooker set on high. Stir occasionally. Add boiling water as necessary to keep beans covered. If you do not want gas, be sure to cook until the beans are all soft. What you will get is genuine Mexican frijoles ready for burritos, or to cover tortilla chips. My favorite is gordaites, but that is not a good camp opportunity.

The thing I watch out for is that the beans are clean. They need to be washed and look them over carefully as once in awhile they have Rocks mixed in. A rock in your burrito could ruin your day, but your dentist would get richer.
If you cook your beans about 6 hours in the crockpot/slow cooker you should not have a gas problem. Stir after about three hours to bring the bottom beans to the top and stir about once an hour afterwards until they are nice and soft. If you like the "re-fried" bean effect you can mash them and leave out the oil or grease.

Ive opened up a can of worms. Pulled everything out of my hunting gear closet. What a nightmare. So much stuff i forgot i had, and or really dont need. Im chucking things that a lot of people would kick my sack for. If its been untouched in the closet for years, in the trash it goes. Need space, need organization. Just bought a 6x4x2 ammo cabinet. Its helping a lot in the organization proccess, opening up more space elsewhere, but its basically full. When i get off the boat and its go-time, need to get hunting fast, ill be able to find anything i need. Thats getting ready in my book.

I learned as a youngster, always have everything( possible ) ready. Ended up on a few nice trips as a young man,,,

Headed up to set trail cams, had a great hike in one area and planned to set trail cams. Andrew hand stopped as he was setting the camera,,

I said

" Huuh, what did I say last night,,?"

4 a 1/2 hour hike,, and we'll do it again,,,tomorrow. Andrew didn't change the batteries in his cameras, and they were dead.

One concern in all the years never had a bear in this canyon. Loads of bear piles and lots of fresh elk sign. But we wonder if the elk were there because there is water. Saw a bull and a cow and calf feeding at 10 AM?

Some time later we checked out the campsite location and the hunting near camp, Saw lots of deer!
