Archery elk season 2021 is........

Postby Tigger » 04 02, 2021 •  [Post 1]

over before it starts. Met with a surgeon today. Torn rotator cuff. Looks like surgery in a couple weeks. 6 weeks of a sling, followed by 5 months of recovery and therapy. Gun season should probably be okay. Not looking forward to a summer with 1 arm. :(

Anybody had rotator cuff surgery before?

Oh man that's a real bummer. I have not had surgery but I've hurt both my rotator cuffs and even with pretty consistent exercise and conditioning I have almost constant discomfort. My guess is surgery is in my not to distant future. Could just do what Dirk Durham the Bugler did last year and use a mouth tab. He killed a bull in Idaho using one.

Been there!
And passed on some huge bulls because I was shooting low draw weight and afraid to draw.

7 years ago(?) $37,000 My co pay almost 10 K.

Go to specialist now. Do PT before the surgery too. I couldn't even put my arm up on my wives shoulder in the pickup when we were dating,..

My surgeon offered me a crossbow permit. He also instructed me very clearly how I was to draw a bow,.... Since a lot of his shoulder were archers.
For years my kids did most of the shooting, I couldn't lift and swing my shotgun I had excessively messed up my shoulder starting small engines, construction and trapping.
Get that thing fixed. Do the PT and hunt
One thing on PT, likely they will want to schedule you for, 3, 4 times a week, what ever. Ask what you can and should be truly doing from or at home. Very specific,. And do it
PT folks arent use to peple doing what they should be doing so be specific,..

I injured both my shoulders playing college ball. One I had fixed, one I didn’t and I should have. If I remember right I was in the sling for 2 months and I was back playing full speed in four months. I was doing daily PT and was in good shape pre-surgery. Do everything they tell you to do, but also let your PT know that you are onboard for a more aggressive recovery - if you put in the work in (being smart about it), you will be surprised at how fast you can come back. The first session I had with my PT surprised me, they cranked on my arm and it hurt, but they said the repair was strong but they had to work through the muscles and tendons not being use to moving from being in the sling. Good luck with the recovery!

Sorry to hear about that! Perhaps you’ll be an overachiever in your recovery and be back sooner.

Yep, you're giving up waaay to easy!

Several years ago I severely tore mine. Had to go straight to the ER, was in a sling for a month & was told I needed surgery. In the meantime as I waited I was told to check out a Sports Dr. I did he strongly suggested not to have the surgery, this was in June. I did all he asked me to religiously & more. I hunted elk with my bow that Sept.

For 3 weeks I couldn't raise my arm more than 2" but I was determined, little by little I suffered through the pain & built up the area around the tear with the Sport Drs recipe. It's been 10 years & no issues at all.

And Elknuts prescription could be right on .

Last summer I rolled my atv. My shoulder felt just as it did before my shoulder surgery.
the thought of another surgery and telling my wife I may have wrecked it was a bit spooky
In December it was still bothering me. I went to a MD sports specialist PT, Nine weeks of proper strength conditioning and Im back to 70 lb draw weight. How ever his suggestion was I keep up the stretching and strength training. He told me I had the tools to never see him for that shoulder again,, He also squared away some neck pain

Well unfortunately it isnt the release that is an issue. I wont be able to pull my bow back most likely. At least that is what the surgeon says.

I screwed my shoulder up way back when I was young and dumb. I just worked my way through it as best as I could. I finally got back full use of it. But now it is an issue again. The Dr. signed me up for a lifetime handicap crossbow permit. But now both knees are shot and my balance is terrible. I would be a walking disaster up on the mountain. So I suppose it's time to give it up and just resort to shooting ground squirrels off the front porch. But at least I can still make a few knives for a hobby. I'll be coming out with a few new ones to sell before too long if anyone is interested.

About the same here Bill.I bought all the goodies for a crossbow set up,but could not get it done last year.Sold it all. My shoulder has been replaced, but I didn't eve get full use of it again and like you,my knees are bad.I put in for ML cow elk up at Morapos, but doubt I will be able to get around. I might ride out and sit on stump some where.I can still ride my old mule.

Well the surgery is over. Rotator cuff and biceps reattachment. The nerve block mostly wore off last night. I just slept through my pain med time by 45 minutes. I don’t recommend trying that. :(

Update: still very sore but able to get up and about a little. Some brief periods of a lot of pain but much more with little or no pain.

Taking some pretty intense pain meds. Weaning myself off already. I have literally no idea why drug addicts would want to use this stuff. It does not make you feel good. Groggy and lightheaded for sure. I was expecting euphoria and all I got was sleepy!

Daydreaming of elk season and watching some Randy Newberg videos has made the time go by fairly quickly.

Those strong pain meds give me the creepy crawlies. Make me feel like I have bugs crawling around on me. The few times I've had to take them I was off them asap. Heal up soon Tigger, we need you here busting old Swede! It's a heavy job and definitely requires team work.
