Smoky Skies And Elk Movement

Postby Swede » 10 02, 2020 •  [Post 1]

It sure seemed to me that the elk evaporated as soon as the air in my area became smoke filled. Was that a coincidence, or did the elk movement slow way down?

Coincidence. I suppose if the smoke was thick enough to affect vision.... how far they can see, they might lay low.

The smoke was thick enough to limit vision to about 100-200 yards much of the time. I suspect it also limited their sense of smell. At least it limited my sense of smell.

That sucks. I can remember living in the Bitterroot when small ke settled into the valley. We’d drive up to Glacier on the weekends just to breathe clean air.

I don’t know

But it seemed like heavy smoke 2,5,7 mile visibility they seem to back off
Now with that said two years ago vision was under 300 yards and the elk in full rut, but the smoke was so bad I had to leave the area

2 years ago in Idaho, as soon as the forestry crews started to burn the elk moved, deer moved, even got hit on the road! So I believe smoke will move the game out of a area.
If you can't find me, I'm not lost. I'm hunting!
