"Legal" Elk in your hunting area

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 17, 2020 •  [Post 1]

What's considered a "legal" elk in the area you'll be hunting this year? Additionally, what is your personal threshold or goal for your area? Just sparking some elky conversation, it's getting closer

Mine is a brow tined bull or cow elk with the general tag. I also have a B tag for a different unit, so I will be mainly chasing a bull. I will be shooting any legal bull I come across, to make sure the freezer doesn’t go empty for the second year in a row. I would love for that to be a nice 6x6 though - a guy can dream.

Legal is any elk. For first half of the hunt I will hold out for a bull. Then depending on how the group is doing, I might auger a cow. But that also depends. If I have a herd bull close and I get a shot at a cow late in the hunt, I might even wait hoping for the bull. It will depend day to day how I feel at the time and if I feel happy to shoot the elk in front of my, missiles are gonna fly!

Most areas are 4 /side or 3 and a 6" brow tine unless you have cow tag. Then horns not longer than 6". NO Spikes. For me,any legal elk gets shot

Any elk of either sex is legal where I hunt. I won’t take anything but a 6 point bull for the first week or so. After that I’ll drop the bar to a mature 5 point. No raghorns regardless of points and no cows.

New zone this year, so unless the elk are singing everywhere the 1st cow, spike or raghorn bull is going down. Maybe even a calf if it's the last couple of days. My tag is good for a bear, lion or wolf. There all in play this year.

3-point on one side or better ...or cow is legal here where I hunt in Alberta (other areas are six point or better). I will take any legal bull, I don't like to shoot a cow, since there aren't enough elk here. That is why I will take the first legal bull that offers a good shot, that might very well be the one and only opportunity for the season. If it happens to be a six-point, I will take that too.
