Elk Broadheads For 2012!!

Postby ElkNut1 » 06 14, 2012 •  [Post 1]

If any here are like myself then you too love trying out different heads for your elk hunts! It seems like I try a different head every year or sometimes every other year! This year I'm seriously considering the new ViperTrick broadhead! It looks great & I have a hankering to try another over the SnufferSS I've been using! I'll go with the 125grn head with a 430grn-440grn total arrow wt.

How about you folks? What's your choice of head this year?

I've been toying around with the 100 grain 4 blade Wasp SST's. Grabbed a new three pack last week and have been shooting them.. They're not flying so well for me :( Looks like it'll be the 100 grain Shuttle T's again this year which do fly very well out of my Alpine.. I do like trying different BHs though :)

I left Muzzy this year and signed with Wasp...out of my recurves, I love the Wasp Sharpshooters...I shot one of my bulls last year with a Wasp Jackhammer and couldnt believe the penetration and blood trail on a frontal shot...I'm using 486 grain Easton FMJ's out my recurve and 455 grain FMJ's out of my Darton...with the tags I drew this year, its going to be a long season...

I'm going with the QAD Exodus broadhead 100 gr. on my Full Metal Jackets. Total arrow weight is 420 gr. @285 fps. Just over 75 lbs of KE.

I've been shooting Muzzy for a few years. Picked up some Shuttle-T broadheads this year and so far they look consistent in flight. I'll see how they do at longer range, but there's a good chance they'll end up in my quiver.

shot the magnus buzzcut heads last year out of my hoyt alphamax at 290fps but am concerned that shooting them out of my new athens afflixtion at 315ish will be to fast for that head. If that is the case I plan on shooting the shuttle t black ops.

Slick Trick 100grn Magnum put mine down quick last year. Definately will be in the quiver again this year. Still carry the regular 100grn Muzzy's in my emergency spares too.

I'll be shooting the slick trick standards. They worked amazing while in Africa so I can't wait to see what they do on an elk.

Heck muzzy is a proven head, "bad to the bone" (grin) Lots here on the Shuttle T head, that was one of the heads I'd considered too! One of these days I will! I wish Dan would send one my way to test drive!! (grin)

I tend to stick to what works and shoots well for me, NAP Hell Razor for the last season and going fwd. I see that S&S Archery is releasing their own broadhead but man is it expensive, 3 pack is around $70.

I'll stick with the shuttle T's as well. I shot 3 antelope with them last year as well as an elk. Nothing went farther then 100 yards. Only thing I've noticed with the T's is that if your bow isn't tuned PERFECTLY, the broadheads will have a tendency to flare your arrows. Took me a few days of aggravation and micro tuning to get the shuttle t's to shoot how they're supposed to.

I think it is a matter of personal prefrerence on a broadhead.

I am kinda old school .. "if it ain't broke don't fix it".. but like everyone else the newer broadheads are like fishing lures to a bow hunter!

My personal favorite... Innerloc Stainless Steel Extreme's 100 grain... fly like darts on a properly tuned bow.... out to 50 yards on my Hoyt's.

Quality Archery Design - Exodus Series - 100 grain full sweep non barbed... I don't think I have ever done the spin test so easily on my N-Fuse carbons or FMJ's... awesome head... something to be said about that .040 thich blade as well....dying to punch an elk with one to see the results!

Not much of a beliver on mechanicals on elk... but on deer & hogs... the Rage's make huge exit wounds.

Either Shuttle Ts or may try the VPA 150g head. Went to stiffer arrows as I was right on the edge, so hoping that I can get the VPAs to fly like field points. Good luck to all.

Elk Broadheads For 2012!!

Postby slim9300 » 06 16, 2012 •  [Post 22]

Going from 100 grain ST Mags to ST standards. No real reason, I'm thinking the standards will be slightly more accurate and might penetrate a tad better. It will be tough to improve upon the results of the Mags though.

Shuttle T for me as well. To be honest, though, I am confident that any quality made broadhead would work just fine for me. My bow is tuned and I've switched out broadheads a few times while practicing just to compare and I don't find they fly any different from one to the next. The important thing for me (and probably all of us) is that I'm very confident in what I'm shooting.

Agreed, tons of quality heads out there!

Tyler, I looked the video over, not too sure about the way those bleeders are so far forward, they look out of place? Maybe it was just the view he showed? They may look different in person!

Started useing 100 gr. Shuttle T's a few years ago, and have to say it is the best broadhead I have ever used. Shoots like a fieldtip, quiet, great penetration, solid and cuts a large hole. My last 2 bulls and 2 bucks dropped in sight and traveled less than 20 yards. 2 of my hunting partners switched and are getting the same results. Dan Evans, owner of Trophy Ridge, just came out with the new Black Ops. { Shuttle T's in Black }

ctdad, yes I knew that, but I love resharpening heads or touching them up out of the package, most heads just do not come sharp enough to my liking. I've not had the privilege of checking out the Shuttle T yet & maybe they come extremely sharp already! Thanks!

Re: Elk Broadheads For 2012!!

Postby CrazyElkHunter » 06 21, 2012 •  [Post 35]

The stainless steel blades are thick, solid and very sharp. I only use new ones on elk even though the blades are replaceable. I have sharpened them for smaller game like deer and pigs, but usually turn the used head into a practice head. What I was really impressed with the head is the hole it made on the 1st elk I shot and how it sliced through the entrance rib and still got complete penetration with no damage to the blades. The tip pulls the skin in at impact and the skin expands when the blades start cutting which creates the larger hole without affecting penetration. Sounds like a lot, but experiencing it for myself on several animals has made me a believer. I shot this bull at 59 yds with complete penetration and over a 2 inch entrance hole. It was like a scalpal and he didnt even know he was hit which tells me a cleaner, faster hemorage, less painful kill. I was even able to call him back to my direction which tells me he was not feeling pain. There have been a lot of good broadheads on the market I have used over the past 35+ years, and I have to say this is the best I have ever used on elk. Sorry for the long answer, but elk season is getting close and the fever is setting in. :oImage

I just read Trent's experience with Shuttle T's trying to micro tune. I guess I have been lucky and never experienced tuning problems with them. I can shoot a field tipped arrow and shoot a Shuttle T right behind it with no difference out of 3 different bows. My friends are experiencing the same and we love it because we do not have to retune our bows and sighting in is easier The only thing I noticed is shots over 60 yds the Shuttles dropped a inch or so more than the field tip. That seems to be normal with all the broadheads I have shot. .Image

A lot of shuttle t fans on here which is great to hear. I purchased some to start testing with back in February long before I found this thread. I have been looking at them for awhile.

I have only shot 3 elk in the past 7 years but I am to make it number 4 this year. My first elk was with a Magnus Stinger 4 blade, second was with a montec 3 blade and the last was with a snuffer ss. All 3 heads dropped the elk within sight: the first did a 50 yard semi-circle and crashed, the second didn't know what happened and stopped to my cow calls and he ended up tipping over about 10 yards from the shot, and the last was a cow that made it 70 yards before crashing but it was in dark open timber and I could see it all the way.

Good luck and good testing to all!

A lot of good responses to this thread. Curious would any of you mind posting up how far your shots have been with certain heads and where and what you hit on the animal and the end result. I think this would give us all a lot better idea about bh's and their performance. A mediocre head is going to do a great job if an elk is broadside at close range and the head doesnt hit any bone, but what about the ones that do. Give us some info here guys, Thanks

Brad, define bone to you? Broadheads are not designed to penetrate just any bone, hunters would do best to stay away from scapula/shoulder blade & leg bone hits! Not much good comes of it when those targets are met!

Elk Broadheads For 2012!!

Postby iRem » 06 30, 2012 •  [Post 44]

Ok I'll put myself out there, I shoot with an older PSE and I have always shot Thunder Heads! I do not like to try any thing new, if it's not broken why fix it! I am in the market for a new bow next year and I have been holding off for years! Once I switch over to a new bow I plan out trying out different BH with my new set up to see what works best for me!! I'm leaning towards Shuttle T's. I like the idea of having a solid BH instead of the 3 razor blades that usually are only good after 1 hit or miss!! Good info, look forward to trying out new product next year!!

Magnus stinger four blade, cut on contact, they fly great, and the back of the main blades and the bleeders are sharpened. A little more difficult to "get razor sharp"as the blades are stainless, and I like to get my heads so sharp you bleed just looking at them.

I Also use Magnus 2 blade with my elburg longbow. The last elk I killed with the longbow did penetrate a rib, about 14" of overall penetration, and the 2 blade shredded the vitals as it likes to move around in the chest cavity. The one big drawback with the 2 blade is less of a blood trail.

iRem - nothing wrong with a Thunderhead. Not many will mention it, but a lot of knockoffs over the years that have tried to match it. Heck, before Rage, even Chuck used them!

I like the discussion about bone penetration. Has more to do about kinetic energy and chisel tip broadheads. Have witnessed 2 coc heads bend on bone hits -including ferrel bends! Really need a 450g+ arrow with some speed to have the "plow through power" to pass through a bone and do damage. You really see it when you come back East and hunt whitetails with elk arrows. You can literally blow them over with a not perfect hit that hits the shoulder palet.

Shuttle Ts, muzzy original, thunderheads, etc will do. Good luck to all.

Yes, welk, the coc heads with the softer steel were great at having the tip bend over, but magnus has done a great job with the chisel tip and hardened steel. You also have a lifetime guarentee on the ferrel... hit a rock, send it in, you get a new one. I don't know any other company that does that.

I used thunderheads for years, they are a great head, and I believe they were the first to come out with the hardened chisel tip which is still being copied today. Although I never had "tip issues" with the thunderhead, I have had blades break hitting bone. I just seem to get more penetration with the coc.The most important thing is......" Keep em sharp, and hit em right."
