Wapiti Hunt Daily Game Plan(s).....

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 05 16, 2017 •  [Post 1]

So campers, once you've arrived at your elk camp, set up, and settle into your recurring daily battle rhythm.....what normally occurs each day? Sure it depends on the type of hunting your doing (base camp, backcountry, etc.), but for you, what it your usual game plan for any given day? Feel free to elaborate on your poll answer/selection ;) .

We like to get back to camp, threeish. It is usually a two hour ride back. Relax for an hour, and usually fire up a few dutch ovens, including one for desserts, Apple cobbler, blueberry cobbler served with whipped cream or fresh sweet cream.Maybe Pineapple upside down cake. Then we have tortilla casseroles, , stews, roast and an assortment of dinners

First option. Leave before the sun comes up. Anywhere from 1/2 hour to 1.5 hours depending where I'm headed that day. Don't head back to camp until it is dark. If I'm not on elk in the evening I will glass until I can no longer see and like to listen for a while after it is dark.

Depends on where or how I am camping. Spike camp I will be out all day but don't hunt the mid afternoons while the winds are swirling. Usually set up a half mile or more away, depending on the terrain, for a mid day meal and break. Road camping I will either come back to camp, rest and move for the evening hunt if I wasn't on elk. If I see fresh sign I will either stay or explore the drainage further until dark.

I voted "other" since I now live where I hunt (retired and moved to a place on the edge of a national forest). I hunt pretty much all day the first couple of days of the season but after that I'll go out mostly during the week (less number of hunters in the field) with occasional hunts on the weekends.

When I do go out, I start before sunrise and get settled in to a good ground stand. I'll sit until around 10 AM or so and then I'll move slowly toward a spot that I feel has potential as a day bed. I'll either sit on a day bed or walk slowly and scout my way toward a good evening ground stand. Some days I'll only hunt half the day and most often that's the morning to about noon. On days where a storm is blowing in I will make sure that I'm out watching along grassy bottoms toward sunset.
