NM unit 15

I drew a 2nd season bow tag for unit 15 in NM, anyone have any insight. PM if ya do thanks. the scouting has already started I basically live on google earth right now.

I drew first muzzleloader, same unit. I hear ya on the google earth scouting!! It will be my first time in the unit, so looking for some info as well.

As I remember ,I went south of Quemado on RD 32, about 25 miles or so and took a road that headed west . Map shows it as rd 23, turn left on rd 249 and then it turned into rd 216. Section 17 shows Dry lakes.
Water was scarce,but found several dirt stock tanks elk seemed to be using.

Or continue south on 32 until you reach Apache Creek. Turn Right. I think it is Rd 12, but it is the one that goes to Reserve.

Before Reserve, ( about 7-8 miles)turn right again on rd 49 an go NW to Toriette Lakes. that is about10-15miles

Country was mostly big mature ponderosa pines with scattered oak brush.
A lot of small two tracks roads and a good number of ATV's on them

I hunted it a couple times many years ago.

Its a tricky unit....if you think you are going to run and gun....its tough. Those old cows in there have seen it all. You will have satellites streaming by you...but the big bulls are MUCH harder to call. Some of them will already have an arrow in them or 3. [I was at the butcher shop in Springerville and there was a big bull they were finishing they pulled 3 BH's out of him in different states of corroding]

The elk will move into those meadows at night and bugle their azzes off....then be gone by daylight. Hunting those beautiful meadows is a waste of time. They typically bed up to a couple miles away in exactly what you would think, NF slopes. IMO you can hunt the trails going to bedding in the AM if you n find one where you can get the wind right- tricky as they use those thermals. How do you know which trail.....trust me you will know it when you see it.....some of those trails look like a superhwy. You can find remote water source near a bedding area. Heck I had a 340ish bull come down to a tank right off the road at dark...yes they use those.

While sneaking on those elk remember, they pattern your footsteps in that noisy stuff and will make you from 300 yds out on a still day. Learn how to glunk....I've never heard so many elk glunking as in that unit. Hope that helps.
