Hey guys, Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I grew up hunting Midwest critters. grandpa started letting my tag along when I was 4 years old. Roughly 5 years ago started making an annual trip west. Then 3 years ago it turned into 2 trips west each year. Elk are on my mind 90% of the time anymore. I try and do something each day to improve myself for the coming fall.

This will be my 6th year hunting elk in WY and 3rd in ID. Wyoming is a rifle hunt and ID is archery. Been successful with the rifle but keep striking out with the bow. Last year i finally convinced my dad to come to ID with me. We got into elk within 2 hours of having boots on ground and dad was at full draw on a spike at 6 yds, but he would never step out from the brush to give him a shot. The wind ended up swirling, you all know the rest of that story but a great way to start a hunt non-the-less. We had multiple encounters that trip but never made it happen.

It took me a few years to convince dad to come with but i was persistent and he either decided it'd be a good time or just got sick of me badgering him about coming along:mrgreen:
Dad's got the bug now as i saw a new garmin and new pack in his basement when i stopped by the other day

We're gunna try a new area this year in ID and hopefully have a little better luck.

Sounds like you need work on tactics (don't we all?) Make sure you check out the Elk Hunting Calling Card thread for a great basic intro to tactics, then get the Elknut Playbook for your PhD . Read it about 5 times before next season, and your chances of success will go way up. Also check out the archived tips and there is some great info in that section.

Awesome you got your Dad on board - that may be even bigger than the elk hunt in the longterm.

Yes, tactics in the thick stuff when I don't know where the elk are need work for sure. Let me see them from 2 canyons away though and I've been able to always put one on the ground. I'm not good at just wandering around in the forest at a snails pace. I'm always moving to fast. Looking to try a different, more open unit in ID this year to maybe help accommodated my "run and gun" tactics.

I've got all ElkNut's stuff. Even spoke to him on the phone a few times. Hell of a guy
