New to Elk hunting

I am looking to try my hand at elk hunting. I have never done an Elk hunt and being from Texas dont have many options around home. I dont mind a drive but looking at keeping the cost down as much as possible. What would you guys recommend as the best way to go?

Lots of variables there black. You looking for guided or unguided? You asking what state to go or what equipment or gear? One of the most fun elk hunts I had was a leftover cow license. I got into a decent unit that took preference points to draw a bull tag but it was very fun and exciting even though I could not shoot a bull. To keep the cost down this leftover cow hunt is a great way to go plus if cost is an issue then I would do a diy hunt but take into consideration gear you will need if you don't have any already.

Welcome to the forum blackdog. In my opinion you would do well to find an experienced elk hunter, that knows a good area and is willing to partner up with you. Having a great tag for a big bull is great, but if you are not experienced, you will most likely eat the tag. Be patient, apply for quality tags and hunt faithfully until you draw.
Books and magazines can get you a head start, and this forum has a lot of experienced hunters willing to make suggestions. Just remember; just because it works for someone else in their hunting area does not mean it will work the same for you in yours. Some things are universal, but not everything. Knowing which is which requires some experimenting, aka experience. Best wishes buddy.

Hey Blackdog, what part of TX are you from? Are you looking to hunt rifle, muzzleloader, or bow? That decision will make a big difference in how we advise you. Colorado has decent tag prices, as does Idaho. Montana is my home state but I wouldn't recommend it price wise. It's where I hunt, but I get discounted tags because I was born in state.
