My buddy isn't much of a western hunter...

After 3 trips out and only one what I would call a good hunt my buddy has abandoned me. He tried talking me into going home. He rented a car yesterday and headed back to Alabama. Hunting solo for the remainder of the trip.

Yup. Currently sitting somewhere above 10k. Wasn't going to be able to do that with him.

To each their own, I'd rather be alone and be able to hunt my way than with hunting partners that force me outside my comfort zone. Thank goodness I don't don't have to hike up to 10K (but I would if that was where the elk were), I'm lucky enough to be able to find elk at 5 to 7 thousand feet.

I would have a really hard time calling that guy my friend after that. He should have at least stayed in camp!

I felt kinda bad for him. He just messaged me to tell me that he went from 310 to 295 in those three days. I think he was also homesick. His first time to be gone from his wife and kids for more than just going to work. This was his first time West of the Mississippi River. Heck other than going to Tennessee to hunt or Florida to the beach it marks one of the few times he has ever left Alabama.

It's all good though. I've been napping all day at 10k waiting on evening to get here.

I killed my elk Saturday of opening day, but I still got up each morning,saddled up and went out with my hunting partner.I only sat and read a book where we tied up the mules but I also did some bird dogging for him.We have been hunting together since about 1976 on and off.He'd do the same for me. In fact,I think he only goes with me to keep me from going alone.

My hunting partner is my wife... Couldn't ask for a better partner, she still learning but we have fun.... Just have a tough time when we can both get away... Almost all of my hunting is done with family, it makes for great memories

Keep your head up and it will happen. Use this for a learning experience. I have hunted with quite a few guys. Finally found two that are the real deal.

That's the dream right there! Until I can talk my lady into it, its solo hunting for me.

On the few occasions that I've had a partner to hunt with, I end up spending most of the day wishing I were solo. Embrace the solitude Bald!

sorry to hear that. I came home myself from a solo hunt in north 81 due to a rancher moving in a large heard of sheep and nobody hearing or seeing an elk for the last 2 weeks. i spent 5 days hiking the ridge tops and valleys from 9800 to 11200 looking for sign of any remaining elk. After finding several locals that had experienced the same as i had for the last several weeks and due to not a single elk sound, i packed up camp and came home to NM. THe wife tried to get me to stay out and try another area, but i was not prepared with a plan B so i decided to come home instead of frustrating myself with being in an area that i had no experience with. Next year i will have several locations scouted and in backup of any place i try first.

If i had known your buddy left i might have joined up with you and helped you out and spent more time out there. Hope you get one down and have a great rest of your hunt.

I had a buddy do that to me on a trip to New England once. 3 days into a 10 day hunt he got homesick and wanted to go home. I wasn't ready to quit so I found an Amtrak line and dropped him off.

If you want company in the future, let me know. I just got back from a solo trip.

Ive had one great hunting partner in my life: ( all my trapping partners were great) he was ten years younger and in the fittest shape. Any where, any time, any game.
The majority of my hunts are solo,.. coyote, deer, elk, upland, waterfowl,... I dont mind occasionally hunting with others
However my wife and daughters first.

Generally if you are really into something its tough to find some one who is similar in dedication and mind.

Enjoy your hunt just the same,.. but I will say it is a bit weird to pack up and head home.

When guys hunt with me Im clear with the parameter on "my hunts". The hunts done when!,.. Or we are staying until,...the expectations are,..
I had a good friend that was a difficult partner.Thinking we could shave a few minutes off by driving faster while sleeping just a few more minutes . Most times I was picking him up at his house, sometimes he wasn't ready. It just got to the point where I said show up at my place at such a time, or I was gone, and I was. A couple times I left without him, once the weather was terrible. I had watched hundreds of mallards drop into a spring the night before, Killed 6 drakes within minutes without him.
