emotion or have a meaning?

when I was getting in to elk hunting a few years ago, I was reading all about calling and there were many people that were of the opinion that if you didn't make the absolute right call at the right time, the elk would turn tail and head for the next county. I always thought this was bs, and thought elk were more if an emotional animal. I am a believer that if you mimic the emotion of the elk, or you put the emotion you want the elk to feel in to yours calls, you'll be far more successful than trying to get the right "words." I find it very annoying people pretend to know what the elk are saying based on the call they are using. there's no way a person can understand what a certain call means, you can guess, but you don't know. just my.opinion guys.

so, what side are you on? do you call off emotion or do you think the calls are saying specific words and you need to get them exactly right?

Don't know for sure, but I have heard some pretty strange sounds coming from elk that I have never heard on a DVD. It is believed however,that only humans have emotions. Animals only react to instincts or conditioned responses

I don't know if emotion is the correct term, but if a bull is bugling at me and it sounds like his eyes are rolled back and he's pissed, I'm going to try and put that same feeling in to my calls. if I am a cow, I am going to try my hardest to beg and plead him to come check me out. that might make more sense.

Not sure my answer to this but I do know for several years I put much "emotion" into my calling and on occasion I do get a dumb one to come in. I however, after listening to others stories and how they know what call to produce at what time and the success they have, I am going to apply this next time! A lot of people in the woods run around blowing their bugles and cow calls and getting the same response as me. I think the people that learn the techniques and practice this concept/calls have much better success than I. I do know how to watch the wind and by no means a "sloppy" hunter. I need a change and that is why I am switching things up. Plan on ordering the books and videos soon to prepare for next season(have to sit this one out). Just my 2 cents...........

It's both! Emotion is key as my #1, #2 would be the type of sounds made based on experience. Is that bull ready for a challenge? If not you might push him right out, if you feel there is not a lot of emotion in his responses why not keep poking and get him emotional. It's knowing when to use the emotion and the type of sound with the emotion you are trying to replicate solicits the response or reaction you want. That said elk make all kinds of sounds and so do I, there are 4 sounds I know and my plan is dictated by those sounds. And they are all very different. Never think that every bugle needs to be a 3 note high pitch sound.

1) lazy bugle- Bedded bull (always go after them in the bedroom high success rate)
2) Location bugle (try and pin point and close the distance, it can be hard as these bulls are usually on the move hard to keep up)
3) Pushing cows ( I always just try and keep track until they bed)
4) challenge bugle ( Gotcha high success rate)

Just my two cents, I love to call bulls in and strictly rely on my bugle. I have been elk hunting for 25 years and it took many years to figure things out, it's what works for me.
