Bird hunting while in Montana for elk

Postby MidwestHunter » 07 04, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Does anyone have any suggestions on bird hunting (grouse, pheasant, etc) around middle of October for someone without dogs? Elk hunting in southwestern Montana, but could spend day or two in northeastern or wherever if better? Anyone know any free places that we could spend a day, and maybe have some luck without dogs?

Thanks!

OMG Midwest if you had a dog there you'd need mules to pack them all out. No dog needed! And no need to relocate either. The grouse live right up where the elk are all up and down the west side of Montana and eastern Idaho. I have seen them lower earlier in the season but the best place to find them is in shade patches on the edge of pines along big meadows or clearcuts up high. But not just there. Along ridges and trails all over. You have 3 species up in the hills. Ruffed, spruce or Franklins, and the Dusky or Blue Grouse. The blues are huge and slow. They walk more than fly. I have killed quite a few of all three... with rocks! One time me and a buddy both limited out with rocks in 5 minutes. They will fly from the ground up to the first branch and just sit there. Take blunts or small game heads and a few junk arrows. Try to shoot them on the ground so you don't lose arrows. If one scoots away from you have your partner circle around and stalk them back toward you. Note: Do not shoot buddy!

Take some Alpine Touch seasoning from our sponsor and you'll be set. They make a great addition to the menu. If you've never covered any ground in the mountains where there are grouse you're in for a treat.

Midwest, you brought back memories of my dad. He used to enjoy taking grouse back to camp and having them for dinner. They were great and sure made a quick delicious meal. I never hunt them anymore. I don't even know if it is legal where I am in September. I will need to check it out, but I doubt I would shoot one until after the elk hunt.
