Which week for CO archery?

Postby VT Sasquatch » 06 07, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I failed to draw a tag for the muzzleloader season so I am planning to get an OTC archery tag and hunt public land in unit 41. I was wondering if it would be better to go the first week of the season or wait a couple weeks for the elk to start rutting behavior. I'm a complete noob so I would appreciate suggestions. Thanks

I was in your shoes in 2014. I put in for ML and didn't draw so I went archery. I opted to go at the end of September hoping that the elk would be more vocal. You need every advantage you can get when bow hunting elk at high altitude.

Don't worry about the MZ, the MZ don't concern themselves with bowhunters. Get out there from Sept 14th on & frequent areas that have no trails or gated roads. If possible locate bulls 1 hour before daylight by bugling for their location, this works pretty well & can put you on elk nearly every morning of your hunt.

You will find most locals might play around during the early part of the season, but they get serious and hunt the last week.
