Idaho or Colorado

My preference is to hunt Montana again but I am not sure if there are any leftover licenses there. Southern Colorado is another option and is a lot closer drive and I am considering idaho as another option. Wondering what you guys thin?

There are elk in all 3 states, just make sure you elk hunt, this is how we all gain experience. Not elk hunting for a year is like re-learning things that were basic the first couple of times. Pick a state & hone in on an area then the unit, you will find elk! Good luck bud!

Because I hunt turkey so much and hunt them pretty much the same way as elk, I feel I keep the elk tactics honed at a fairly high level. True enough there are some elk specific tricks but I believe most hunters that have trouble with turkey are hunting them like deer instead of elk...they don't cover ground, find the turkey, close in before setting up and call. I did learn a few elk specific tricks and am really looking forward to putting them into practice if the situation that calls for them arises. I'm just mainly looking forwar and to getting back out there, and if skills with the recurve keep progressing some of those mountain chickens might be in trouble.

Should still be plenty of tags left for MT, Steve. In general, S. CO will be a more physically challenging hunt than most. There are also a bunch of turkeys so one could log some spots for a future mountain merriam's hunt while elk huntn. Don't sleep on Wyoming for next year. WY has some spectacular elk huntn in general units. You can buy a point for $50 from July-October. No $down just a straight fee. You can draw general for 1-2 pts. As for your current dilemma, I'd go with MT. Good luck!

Thanks Will and congrats on the new addition. Lou said u would be the best guy to contact on the southern end. I suppose if I kill quick in Montana I could swing by and scout or possibly even buy a tag and hunt two states. If my Montana spot still has elk I should kill a lot quicker than last time...I can't imagine the weather being worse than last time. Girls were laying out in bikinis.

I also might just hunt the turkeys before elk and get to know the area. I am 16 away from 250 and plan on going for all 16 next season.
