Talking to Tules ?

Noob here again -

So I'm not sure I'll be out in the rifle or archery season this year and Alaska next year it's time for me to start practicing my calling and on that note getting some calls. I've used mouth calls for turkey and feel comfortable with them so I'm assuming the elk calls will be similar ? I've also been eyeing one of Elknuts packages although I'm not sure which one.So my question which I did a search for and didn't find much info on is the Tule elk language - how does it differ and do the informational books, dvd's etc go over the fundamental differences ? I get to see quite a few Tule elk around my area down on a military base here in California - and also the closest spot to hunt for me is 2hrs away but I may get the opportunity to converse with them for practice.
Rocky mountain and Roosevelt elk are closer to 10hrs away for the ones in my home state ;-(

I would love to know your thoughts on equipment and recommended dvd's,books, etc along with the tule elk questions ?

PM REQUEST - my girlfriend is GUN HO on hanging an antelope skull in the garden this year and with her points in Wyoming and leftover tags it seems like the most obvious place to go. I'm in on the WY General elk draw with 1 pt so thats a possibility or a leftover cow tag is fine with me as well. Since I will be leaving her along with the dog and 6yr old at the trailer while I go off hunting would anyone be willing to help me narrow our choices down to a few units that would be gorgeous and fun filled for a family to hang out in and hopefully hold 1 or 2 elk ? I've been scouring the maps and unit information but none of the information says anything about the scenery - I want them to have as much fun as me back at camp fishing, chasing grouse, or just looking out onto the horizon. Our trip dates are based on whether or not Jorden gets one of the wedding catering contracts for her new business she just started. So it going to either be late archery or early rifle. Not asking for anyone honey holes just helpful suggestions on planning our second great trip out there !!!

I’ve hunted both Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain Elk but not Tule’s. Vocalization habits and particular sounds of the Roosey’s and RM’s seem very similar to me and I would venture a guess that the Tule’s are no different. That said, it’s all relative to hunting pressure and most importantly, the “time” of the year you are hunting them. Although elk vocalize year round, the various phases of the rut spark the big galoots to be much, much more vocal as they communicate their needs, advertise their prowess (I’m the one you want ladies), issue ear piecing warnings, exhibit nervousness through alarm barks and nervous/popping grunts, etc., all occurring at an epic level in some instances as the cows come into estrus. I’ve known a lot of cats that have transitioned from using a turkey diaphragm to one made for elk and they seemed to do fine with basic elk sounds. It does however, take a considerable amount of practice to become better than average with an elk reed. Equally as (or more) important as being able to make decent elk sounds is to learn about elk behavior and habits and the various sounds they make. Which Elknut package to get? Give Paul a call, he’s a straight shooter and will set you up with the tools you need. Check the game laws in your state before you go have conversations with the local elk herds when not hunting them (some states have wildlife harassment laws and I have a feeling, your state may be one of them).
