calling elk in late season

Postby e.h. » 01 28, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I live in kansas and elk are new to this area.I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to call elk in in late winter like jan Feb and march.I see the elk in a herd on a wheat field about 800 yds from where I have permission. I'm just wondering if anyone has an idea how to get them over to where I can hunt.

Welcome to the forum e.h. It is good to have you here around the campfire. I don't know if I can help you or not. The latest I have called bulls is in November.
I would try a location two or three note bugle, with no chuckles on the end, and just see if you can get a response. Elk are generally pretty quiet in January and February. Elknut used to feed elk this time of year, and maybe he has some ideas. Maybe he just rang a dinner bell. I don't really know.

Swede.thanks a lot for your idea I will try it.it the first time for me to hunt elk and have never seen a wild 1 til a month ago.I'm just amazed.I'm sure this flat land and grain fields is prob way different hunting for them than the places most people hunt them.

Welcome to the forum e.h. You might try calls that peak the elks curiosity such as a calf distress call. Heck I've inadvertantly called in elk while using a rabbit in distress call trying to bring in a coyote. Just a thought.
