2 bulls in 3 days

I'll start this off by saying I didn't connect on a bull during archery season for myself tho I did miss one nice 6x6 and had multiple encounters throughout the season but I just couldn't make it happen.

last Tuesday I had a buddy contact me because he hadn't seen a whole lot of action for his washington quality rifle hunt. He was one of 3 people who drew the tag. I said I'd take him up to an area I knew. We parked the truck and unloaded the quads, and I thought about going with my gut and hunting that spot but decided against it. We rode the quads up high into the timber and had an evening hunt. Didn't see or hear an elk! I couldn't believe it. We headed back to the truck at dark and my buddy informed me he was gonna call it quits after almost a week. He missed his family and was worn out. We got back to the truck to hear 4 bulls screaming right where I wanted to go! I looked at him and said your not going home now! He agreed.

We met up at the spot the next morning and the bulls were still screaming. I knew right where they would go. As it got light we headed up the hill. Saw a nice bull moving across with some cows about 1000yds out. Crossed the creek and there was a big 6x7 with some cows hanging out in the private lroperty. We watched him for about half an hour waiting for the cows to pull him up the hill onto the state land. The cows disappeared but the bull didn't follow. We worked up the hill to get above where they would head. They showed up but no bull. We decided to push on. Saw 3 bulls running in circles and a bunch of cows way to our east so we eased up and decided he would need to take a lesser bull because that big boy was stayimg put. As we inched forward 3 more bulls came running over the ridge with cows. They all met up in the same spot. We crested the hill and I saw and nice bull bedded amd told my buddy there's your bull! As we got ready for the shot a monster stepped out! 300 yds and he drilled him! Ends up we have pics of this bull live. But he broke off his split tine that made him an 8pt within the last 2 days. My buddy was pumped this was his biggest bull

The story on the 2nd bull is, A good friend of  mine had never killed an elk so I took him into one of my areas opening morning washington muzzy season. OTC bull unit. Drove around looking where people were parked in the dark and then went down where I wanted to go. We parked the truck and waited about half an hour until it got light and started to get ready. My buddy was putting his jacket on at the truck and I walked back about 30yds on the road and let out a locator bugle, I was almost cut off by a bull that was about 200yds above us in the cut. I told him to grab his gun let's go! Ran up the hill about 100yds where it levels out and then drops into a bowl. I let out a few cow calls on the phelps ez estrus and then a quick challenge bugle. He ripped off no more then 80 yds below us in the fog, I cut him off with another challenge. Sat for about 30sec, then a few cow calls. He ripped off another even closer so I cut him off with another challenge. Few seconds later he appeared about 30yds. Slowly coming in. I stopped him when I thought my buddy had a shot but he was behind a tree about 15yds in front of him. I had a perfect shot but he didnt! The bull got a little nervous and turned to walk off and went back over the rise. I ran up and told him to run to the edge. When he did that the bull barked so I barked back and he stopped. My buddy raised up and shot, dropped him in his tracks about 100yds! 6x6 down 200 yards from the truck, 10 minutes and bout ter shutting the doors! Not bad for his 1st elk! This is one of the bulls I had encounters with during archery season. He would bugle every night behind our camp!

How sweet is that! You got to stay in the elk hunting mix with your calling and help a couple of buds connect on some very nice bulls. Need to start calling you "freezer filler"
