Hunting GMU 53/54 Colorado any tips?

Postby jinksy » 09 22, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Going in colorado the third season in unit 53 mostly the southeastern edge and some in 54. I just purchased my ElkTracker maps. I Will be hunting public land near Somerset (Robinson and Little Robinson creek) that is almost inaccessible except by entering through private land. No ATV's allowed. I'll have a cow tag and a bull tag. Just curious if any of you guys have hunted that area and what I can expect?

I will be in 54 third season this year for the first time as well. I was told to plan for snow and then pray for snow as it takes over a foot of snow to make the elk move out of the high country. Sorry I've never ventured into unit 53 Gunnison has a great bar/restaurant called the Old Miner. Great steaks. It's a good place to get a good meal after being in the bush for over a week eating warmed up meals from home.

I will be out there for my first time also in about 2 weeks for first rifle. It will be my first DIY Elk hunting trip and first elk hunt overall. I plan on entering on the east side

Why you wishing me good luck Mike..... I bought your maps now all i have to do is go where your maps tell me to and wait on them to come to me. I shouldnt need any luck right? LOL.... Really and truly guys you should check out Mikes website and look at what his maps have to offer. I just ordered 3 and probably going to get another one. He spent at minimum a hour on getting the maps positioned exactly how i wanted them.

Where at on the east side? I will be hunting from the west side of Mosley Ridge and south to the border of 54.

Will you be hunting National forest or the wilderness? We are going to be right in the middle of the wilderness. Good Luck!!!

Right now the plan is to head into the wilderness with camp on our backs. This is all subject to change depends mostly on the weather.

I planning to maybe try and enter north of mill creek by about a mile or two if I can find a place to enter then beeline towards the castles and Stormy Pass. Me and my friend will be camping out in that area and then heading towards soap basin and pretty much see what is in that area. This is our first time going out there. We dont really know what to expect other than rugged
