cold calling

Postby powderhogg01 » 09 12, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Well I will be hiking into a less hunted area tomorrow evening for a few days to hopefully get things done. Good news is I know from another that the area has a lot of elk and not many hunters. In years past I have found the herd either in this drainage or one of the next few down. The plan is to move with our camps on our backs and stay mobile, trolling for elk as we move from our original spot. I plan on bugling once every so often when it feels right or when we cross into a new drainage I have been reading ElkNuts tips on cold calling and have a question on the cow calling. At this point in the season I will gladly take a cow if thats what comes. I can do pretty decent lost cow but im not sure what "distress" call I should be trying. I have heard that a calf in distress can bring in cows, listened to some audio and think I could do that fairly well. Any suggestions for going into an area I only scouted once in july and am going on word of mouth.
I will be with a very green hunter who is quite loud on the move so I am planning on moving slow and steady and calling every mile or so sitting for a good chunk of the day. We will just keep working deeper into an area that not many venture due to the miles of steep dark timber. I have good leads on where to start, so hopefully that plus a few days of solid trolling will work out for us. good luck out there guys... I know a lot of places are starting to get good, hope the rut is full swing in your areas

I forgot to ask my other question in regards to breeding and advertising sequences. Are you guys doing this once you have heard and located a bull or is this also a tactic I might use in a cold calling perspective?

I use the advertising and breeding sequences like cold calling. Not sure if elk are around but set up in an elky area.

There's no hard fast rule to when the Breeding Sequence can be utilized, yes it can be used in a Blind/Cold Calling situation to arouse curiosity & interest to elk within earshot. However it's best used when inside 200 yards from a herd bull & satellites harassing him & his cows. This sequence can pull those satellites right to you with a good setup. On Occasion you will pull a herd bull & his cows to you as well but don't expect it! (grin) This is our # 1 calling sequence for satellites! Have fun with it!

Well we spent 2 full days out rolling for elk. we covered 4 drainage and found lots of sign but no elk until last night. we bumped a couple spike as we set up camp. went to bed listening to contact bugles. From what i heard i think in mine may have been too long..possibly why i have not gotten much response? we found elk! go to sleep to wake up a few hours later to a.downpour that's lasted all night. went out in the morning with high hopes.and.hunted all day.. not a single daytime response. As far as I know we did not call anything in. we tried lost cows, excited herd, breeding sequences .. nothing seemed to get them going. but at least i have a good idea on where to go as this area.was.prime..
in the end we heard some coyote, saw some bighorns, found elk, finally heard bugles..so even though we did not harvest we had a good trip money the less

Thanks for the clarification Paul. Guess I misinterpreted your DVD a little.
I'll hold back on using them until we are closer to elk.
