Report from the top of the Mtn

Postby Huntrgathr » 09 13, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Hopefully this posts...

Been chasing a herd bull we call thumbs ( huge rack, small 3rds) since the opener. Caught up with him two nights ago when he went ballistic - chasing cows all over the canyon , bugling, wallowed and came back out with a vengeance. In a game if red light green light ( stop and go speed stalking), His cow ran right into me at 20 yds they spun and fled. I managed to intercept Thumbs at 20 yds but had no shot. Cow chirped to get him to step out but he went after the hot cow instead. Guess I didn't sound hot enough !

The night before that I got stalked by a Mountain Lion. Was making some pleading cow sounds to call me partner back and turned around to see the Lion staring at me from 20 yds. Knocked an arrow, twisted around sideways and shot him head on. Looked like i hit it right between the eyes. Found blood the next day and tracked it for 1/3 mi over 5 hrs but lost blood.

Wind sucks today. Thumbs gave us the slip this morning again. Going to ride it out and wait for him to make a mistake...

wholy cow that would have me changing underpants. Probably should report that incident to the local wardens.. as they will likely want to know about it. thats why im always on top alert when calling especially when calling for or in predator rich areas

That would be an exciting hunt. Can you just shoot a mountain lion because you think it was "stalking" you? I as well would either report it to the warden, or not post that on a public forum.

Dang ID has some liberal cat regs. $11.50 for a 10 month tag? Second tag options? Cool. Wish I had the time and $ to hunt ID. Perhaps someday.

Had to skeedaddle when everbody and their brother-in-law showed up this weekend. So just to clear up a couple details , I did have a lion tag and the season is open in our unit. I went back yesterday and glassed from a high point for a couple hours, looking for the cat or any birds in the area but turned up nothing. The blood trail was extremely difficult, winding down through the trees. Probably an average of one drop of blood every six getting but often times I had to go 30+ feet to find next blood. The trail led down to a steep, ditch-like creek bottom, blood regularly at about 6' intervals, and then just stopped. I'll tell you what, those cats don't leave a track when they're off trail.

Like I said, it looked like a head shot ( shot top pin zeroed at 27yds and later ranged the spot at 21 yds. I had to twist 90 deg in a sitting position so I'm sure my accuracy was compromised. Not a shot I would've taken on an elk or deer but at that point it was either kill or be killed. The arrow hit and deflected at about a 45 to the left and hit a tree. When I picked it up it had white fat and hair on the broadhead with very little blood except at the vanes and knock. The thing that puzzled me was the entire arrow was covered in a clear liquid , maybe a little thicker than water- like joint fluid (?)...

Any theories on where this arrow actually passed through ?

Purely a guess . . . ear or base of ear. Fatty, cartridge, not a lot of vessels.

I would have had to burn my pants and skivvies! No use in trying to clean them if i had a cat that close. Other than that ot sounds like a real fun hunt!!! Good luck on getting thumbs.
