Grouse spooking elk

I had a nice five point coming in and a couple of grouse flushed right under my feet. The elk promptly turned and left.

What do you all think, do elk spook from flushing grouse?

It certainly gets their attention (been there, got the T shirt). It's part of the forest ADT system led by pine squirrels . Sorry them dang winged pests messed up your hunt James.

Absolutely! Elk as well as other animals are very well in-tune with their surroundings! They know when danger or a threat is prevalent! It's called the "survivor instinct"

Grouse???

One of the stupidest birds in the world. I have know idea how they have survived within the food chain. I have practically stepped on them and then all they do is flutter a little bit and stand there in front of you.

As far as them messing up a hunt, not yet. But they sure scare the hell out of me when they flush. However, they do make for good eating back at camp.

while stalking through a section of pine a few days ago I somehow flushed a tree full of them... the explosion of feathers and sounds of 15 different birds was enough to make me need to go get new shorts at camp. based on the sound they made flushing, anything in the area new where we were anyways..

I was in a treestand hunting whitetails and was watching a couple of grouse. Pretty soon, here comes a doe. She gets closer to them....closer....oh this is gonna be interesting......the grouse exploded out from under her nose and she just about went over backwards. Took off about 30 yards and then stopped and immediately crapped. I just about laughed out loud!

Another time I was following a blood trail and wasn intent on looking for blood when one took off from under my nose. I think I jumped about 25 feet up into a tree! Man, what an adrenaline rush!

And my last grouse story....I was hunting them and walking along an old logging trail. About 6 of them were right ahead of me on the trail and when they seen me, one of them puffed up and charged me. Yes, I made him fly before I shot him!

Start My Hunt you got that right! One time me and a guide were walking up a trail and 5 grouse jumped up and landed on a branch only about 8 feet off the ground. We were heading into camp and decided we wanted to take a couple with us for dinner. We started throwing rocks. Missed a few times, by inches, and they just sat there. Eventually we took the first one out. Now if you were sitting on a park bench and your buddy took a bullet what would you do? doh! We kept on chucking rocks and took them out one by one until we had all 5 of them. I guess the only reason they aren't extinct is that coyotes and lots of other predators can't fly or climb trees..... or throw rocks!
