Winter or summer?...

Ok, so now that my CO hunting atlas woes have been resolved, I have a question. I am going with my 16yo son for archery and we have our unit picked, but the question is, this coming weekend, should we be focusing on the summer range & concentration areas or in the winter range and concentration areas. In reality, we are looking at both, but since he only has this coming weekend and next weekend available, we would like to focus on the areas with better chances. Keep in mind we are total newbies, this is our 1st elk hunt ever for both of us. What would you guys suggest?

i would start with finding good high probability areas by using satelite maps find food water and bedding cover then find fresh sign: tracks, droppings, rubs, etc. i would start on the higher side but this is all relatve to where you hunt, wind, thermals etc

Hi phall,

When you say to use satellite maps to find food, you mean something like Google Earth? or something else? We have picked out 3 areas and all have water and good cover for bedding, and since it's been raining for probably the past 6 months in CO, I am assuming that food is abundant compared to the past few years. Anything specific I should be looking for as far as food? Thanx for your inputs.
