I recommend 3/4" max.

But under the right circumstances it will work on a bit more.
Here is an example of connecting to a 1" guy wire at a local Lookout.

Thank you clipshot! I won a clipshot in the Elknut elk calling contest. Did a multiday backpack trip last weekend with my daughter and we found the device very useful indeed. Have not used the suction cup addapter for smaller devices but it appears to be just as useful as the 1/4 20 screw on mount.

An example of non-conventional use.
Sometimes it is easier to hang the camera upside down, and rotate the photo later.
Same applies when using the Smart-Shot.
