Distressed Calf Sounds

Going to try to go and shoot a cow with my bow. Calling like a distressed calf sounds like an exciting way to get it done. Teach me about blind calling, sequence and sounds to make. Any examples to listen to?

By far the most effective sound I know for unresponsive elk, both cow and bull.

LOL, every year I plan on useing this technique for elk,but knowing that there is very large cats in the erea, I always find myself..... well...bears,not so much, but the big, silent,deadly cats,they are spooky!
However,this is my secret weapon back home in the whitetail woods,and I always call in many deer,does and bucks with this sound.This sound triggers the maternal instinct in the does,weather they have a fawn or not.This also works like majic on bucks,as some of the early fawns will come into their first heat cycle.Also, where the fawn is,mom is usually not far away.Fast,frantic,repetitive,sounds work best,and sounding like they are lost,or being tormented,maybe throwing in a coyote yip(not a wolf,lol)paints the picture.
I called in one of the biggest bucks this way as he was chasing a doe in large circles,during the rut,in the marsh behind me.I had nothing to loose,and went crazy with this sound,and even being harrassed by this buck,she came sreaming in, with the buck right behind her,and they both ended up right under my tree.
I think this should work well for elk as well,and would like to hear any stories of calling in bulls or cows using this.

I've called in two coyotes with it to...well one was 3 feet the other I couldn't see. I was on a stump and heard them coming and turned to see them closing fast at ten yards. The one I could see stopped at three feet for over a minute just looking...and looking felt like forever. Finally I decided to stand, call, and draw all at once still not knowing where the second dog was. I imagine he was probably sniffing my backpack. It was pretty funny watching them explode out of there. And no they didn't stop for me on the way out.

Two years ago, deer hunting, my son spontaneously decided to take a nap when we stopped for lunch. I was about 100 yds upslope from him and didn't want to hike back down to wake him up so I started cow calling but he wouldn't wake up. So I started making pleading sounds, escalating to distress sounds. He finally sat up and I turned around to look at my buddy upslope from me and a little two point muley buck came trotting down the ridge at us looking for the sound and stopped. My buddy ( first time big game hunter) slowly turned around as the deer tried to figure out what the heck I was. Boom - tag punch.

As the other guys mentioned, be ready. You never know what's going to come in to a distress call...

This is an interesting thread. I pretty consistently call in mulie does with a jack rabbit distress call when I am out coyote hunting in the winter / spring. They typically walk to within 10 yards of my e-caller. My have to add the cow / calf distress to my elk calling bullpen this fall.

Anyone have some tips on how to get the short and abrupt sounds of calves? I'm working and working on it, but not having much success reproducing the sounds I hear real calves make. I simply can't get the abrupt cutoff at the end with a diaphragm.

Charina, the vid didnt come thru on my pc,so I dont know what sounds you are looking for, however,just a quick example of the maternal instinct that I had just observed,was a baby robin had fallen in between two fences,it was just old enough to fly, but was stuck,so as I tried to catch it it started squawking pretty good,and I could hear a bunch of adults in the trees close by,but not untill I caught the baby did it go "nuts" with the screaming/squawking, which in turn brought all the adults,about 7 or 10 of them,flying right at me,getting real close"all around me".

I seem to be able to get some semblance of the short and abrupt, unusually monotone lost calf call in these two sources by using my stomach/diaphragm muscles to push air in short bursts. With either an external reed, or a mouth diaphragm, its tricky (at least for me) to get this short call with the abrupt ending. Anyone else struggle with this? Or is it no problem for others?

To those of you that have used distressed/lost calf sounds with success, what type of sound do you use? The lost calf call in the youtube videos? Or a series of rapid whiney calf mews like Elk Nut demonstrates in the soundcloud audio?
