Nervous Grunt

I have heard many times on this site the best way to stop a bull on a dime in a small opening is to give him a nervous grunt as soon as you want him to stop. Similar to the way you would grunt at a deer to get them to stop but a different sound?
Doing the nervous grunt without a mouth reed is about all I can do at this point? Does this work just a well? Nervous grunt is similar to a basic cow mew with a low grunt sound at the end, correct? And can be done effectively with just your mouth, no reeds needed, correct? Thought/Feedback?

Yes and yes . You can do a nervous or popping grunt with just your voice also with very good results. Here's a link where Elknut explains how to make the sound with diaphram and tube. This is definitely a sound needed for an effective/functional elk tool box

X2 on the double yes,LOL. I never do the NG with the dia, or anything else,your voice is all you need,and when you need to do this,lots of times you need to do it now,no time to fumble with a call or dia.if it's not in your mouth already......EEEEEEOUGHHHHH! High pitch EEEEE!,get the OUGHHHH!from the very bottom of your gut.

Look at the thread "after the shot" by dr_flash. You will see some stories about how the NG has been used and some strategies for its use. Personally, I usually am forced to use my voice to produce the NG and it sounds rather bad but seems to work just fine. I liken it to a very deep dog bark type sound. I really can't tell the difference between the sound of an alarm bark vs NG. I have to go by the context of the situation and how the elk is acting to tell which is which. Maybe someone could add some thoughts on weather one can tell by sound only, the differance bet. an AB vs NG.

I make the nervous grunt with a diaphragm, and I practice drawing my bow, and NG at the same time. I've witnessed Heartwood make the NG with just his voice( I was caller, Heartwood was the shooter), and have watched him stop bulls dead in their tracks, including multiple times with the same bull. Heartwood makes one of the best NG with reed, and bugle tube I've ever heard, his voice, not even close (grin), but I could not argue with the results he has had.
