Starting point help(salmon region idaho)

Can anyone give me some help, a starting point for the salmon region of idaho. I'm going to buy a deer and an elk tag but would prefer to atleast see some elk since I've never seen on, coming from michigan. Any help is appreciated

I know a little about that area. Mostly right on the Montana border. Curious... what made you pick that area?

A wolf is a trophy animal for sure. Much more difficult to kill than an elk. You could either just get a rug make or consider a pedestal mount since they are cheaper than a full body.

If you knew anything about wolves you'd be as excited to pay to get one mounted as you'd be to fork out the cash to mount an elk. They are a prize for sure!

My only thing with the wolf is I would shoot one if I saw one but I'm not necessarily hunting then so I wouldn't feel like I put any effort into it. Thank you for the pm's as well

I pushed for the wolf portion of this regulation. Unfortunately the same wasn't extended for residents.
I still haven't gotten my way on opening the south to an open take

I can't say any wolf would equal the "trophy" equality in my mind with a trophy bull elk. I would like to have one mounted but would rather kill 5 & leave them lay!! Just my 2cents.

Lefty are those the fur prices for wolves? I wouldn't waste my deer tag on one unless it was the last day, but I see wolf tags are only like 30 dollars otc

Those ore the fur prices, most tanned hides start about $ 500.
Coming from Minnesota I had a few wolves spring fox traps. Spent some time on Isle Royal fishing and trying to get a picture of wolves. Three years ago I saw my first live Idaho wolf.(non-Yellowstoone) Last year I saw a pair in August,.. Ive seen thousands of elk. An archery shot wolf is higher on my wish list than a 350 bull. I wouldn't have a mount likely a tanned hide Even a 350 bull would be horns on the shop wall not a mount.

That's good since you are new to the area. Keep your options open. Zero in on at least two areas and if after a few days it's just not happening in the first one don't hesitate to relocate before wasting anymore time. I would say have a look at the Lost Trail Pass, Montana topo map. You'll see the place I mentioned in the PMs as well as some other areas along the Idaho/Montana border.

So After talking to the regional biologist looks like we might go to 28 instead, 21a is only good after heavy snow falls, has or does anyone hunt this unit?

Keep in touch. 28 is where my wife saw lots of elk this spring. that is one of three areas we will spend some time in this year ATVing
That use to be the area my father in law hunt elk in the 70's and 80s

Will do, looks like a nice area just hope I can get away from the rds, does anyone know if the national forest or fire rds are open year round?
