Unit 16a New Mexico

Hey guys,

Was wondering if anyone could spare any advice on archery hunting the first 2 weeks of Sep in 16a? My father and I were lucky enough to draw our first New Mexico tags and I'd like to do all I can to try and get him a descent bull. I admit I'm new to the forum and haven't put in my time but thought it was worth a shot. We're flat landers from Kansas who have bow hunted elk in Colorado with some success but never had the opportunity to hunt New Mexico. Not looking for any specific hotspots, just advice on what kind of pressure to expect, lots of 4-wheelers etc. We've always hunted wilderness areas so I'm not a fan of 4-wheelers buzzing around but I've never hunted a limited draw area so if ones needed I don't want to be without. Thanks in advance guys.

My dad and I drew 16A last year as nonresidents and had an awesome hunt. There are elk everywhere in that unit. It will also seem like there are people everywhere, but it's a big unit and you will be able to find areas to yourself. We hunted the entire 2nd season last year and I only saw 1 other hunter the entire time I was actually hunting. He was about a mile way. We had our opportunities, but came back empty handed. I can't imagine a more enjoyable hunt, though. It was incredible. The other hunters we met were very, very friendly and helpful.

My dad drew 16A again this year as a nonresident, along with his brother. So, we'll be down at the same time (1st season) as you! Good luck! Don't forget your rain gear!

It's been about 20 years since I hunted 16A, so I won't be much help. One thing to keep in mind is that this year they combined 3 archery hunts into 2 and a disproportionate amount of tags went to the first hunt, so some days will be more crowded than past years.

I will be scouting this summer for my hunt in 16B, if I pick up anything I will share.

It's reassuring to know you didn't bump into someone around every corner. We're used to packing in several miles and getting away from the crowd so this will be a new experience for us.
