Estrus Buzz/Scream Defined In This Podcast!

Folks here's a Podcast on the Estrus Buzz & it's meaning! Is this truly an Estrus sound a cow will use when wanting to be bred? You be the judge! (grin) It's an awesome sound to use for us hunters, as all sounds used by us timing is key! It's best listened to with ear buds or head-phones. Thanks!

Great in site on this sound Paul. I feel many folks are led to believe it's an estrus type sound simply by what they see on video and others sources. Also the name really implies that it's an estrus type breeding sound.

I think it should be renamed and called a round up buzz !! In all honesty I have never heard this sound from any elk up here in Canada but I have talked to elk farmers in our area and he said they do make this sound all year long. The farmer said he noticed it more when they took the calves away to give vaccines. He said the cows become very much on edge and use this sound to locate the calf that is missing !! He called it the maternal sound. I must note he looked at me funny when I called it the estrus buzz !! LOL

So this all makes perfect sense that the cows would use this in the forest as many times they do not have a visual on either there young or maybe even a sister or brother and they want to find them.

I am loving these Pod cast's and I am also shocked not many are chiming in on them. If it was July or Aug it would be a different story all together !!

I have never heard anyone make more sense of what the elk are really talking about than Paul. He puts such a common sense twist on every sound an elk makes and really knows how to speak the language. You don't need to be a world champion elk caller to make the most of each situation.

That was a great podcast. I have not heard the estrus buzz in the wild myself. I am super excited to try it in the woods next season as it is definitely an excited cow sound that is easy to replicate on a diaphram call.

Great job as always. I heard this sound 2 years ago on a solo hunt in Colorado. Early morning, steep mountain side, semi open dark timber, saw movement on left going uphill, heard a lot of that buzz sound mixed in with cow chatter and moving fast. Couple of minutes later two smaller bulls past above me paralleling herd. Neither bull would stop/slow for any of the sounds I put out. Not one of the bulls connected to that herd made a sound. I assumed at the time that was very good sized herd with a cow nearing estrus on the march to their bedroom. Now I am rethinking that encounter after watching your podcast. Great insight mister, I think that podcast should be mandatory viewing for all Elknut folks. Keep up the good work. SWACK
