First time posting here, was looking for some advice as to which OTC units in Colorado will provide a pair of rookie elk hunters an opportunity to kill a cow or small bull in, would prefer a GMU that is a wilderness area, just so we have the opportunity to get into an area fairly deep and away from ATV traffic. Were both in fairly good shape, both have bivy hunted before, both don't mind getting away from crowds and working our way back deep, and both really want to kill an elk and would be happier than a pig in mud to take a cow. I have several units in mind, but I thought I'd ask for some input first before I ask about specific units.

Throw out a bit more information if you get a minute (how long have you hunted elk, weapon of choice (rifle, smokepole, stick and string, rambo knife), other hunting interests, state where you hang your hat, why you've chosen CO to hunt, favorite color (lol), etc.). Again, welcome.

Howdy back to you. I have only hunted unit 77 78 771 buy Pagosa Springs and that was 2nd season rifle we never got skunk. We hunting there 3 years but have not been there for 6 year and I think you need preference points for cow tags. I know there are people that has a lot more info on CO than me. I've hunted mulies in UT and CO the past two years with my bow, my buddy hunted elk with a rifle this past season. Were both experienced enough to know how to survive with a pack on our back. I can't speak for my buddies knowledge level, but as for mine, I have a bare bones base of knowledge to work with, but I'm learning a ton right now and will hopefully be reading "the playbook" in the next couple of weeks. We mainly settled on CO because my buddy hasn't been playing the points game very long, and it offers the largest elk population that's within 16-18 hours of Houston TX, so we can drive there in a day.

In the southern part of the state, promising Archery OTC units w wilderness include 77, 78, Weminuche wilderness. 78,81 South San Juan wilderness. Big Blue wilderness in 65 is huge. Sneffels wilderness in 70 is small.

I can help with 231. Hunted there 3 years ago. Hanging my hat near Gunnison for 10 days a year now.

I hope this thread is still strong, so many great threads and welcoming folks on here I thought I'd jump in this one, if no one minds. Just moved to Colorado and fairly new to elk hunting (1 archery season in Montana). I'll be trying my luck at an OTC tag this fall archery. I'm located Colorado Springs area.

Thanks Elkduds . First hunting season was two years ago in Montana, managed to drop a small buck, and then got interested in archery and had my first miss last fall at a small bull, lol. I like staying active, sports, hiking, target shooting. I actually separated from active duty, and really like the mountains so decided not to move back to Illinois. Weighed my options, taking all my likes and dislikes about locations, and came down here to start school.
