If a man drew a General elk tag am I right in my understanding that that tag is good for all general units & actually allows u to hunt in any of these units with any weapon as long as the season in that unit is open with that weapon? Several units will end up being open for rifle during the rut? Am I way off?

Nope you have it all figured out.. A general tag is good for any general unit that is open. If you're planning on bow hunting the general tag you'll have to pay the extra fee but it's good then for the bow season and the rifle season.

Yes yes & yes except for the fact that you can't hunt in designated wilderness areas.

As far as rifles during the rut.... I certainly do not know the regs in all of the general units but the earliest rifle date I know of is September 26th.

Thank yall. I'm thinking there are some Indian Summer that may open September 1. Or at least I don't see where they're designated as "archery only". For example; Unit 66. I k now nothing about this Unit, only using it for an example.

Yep 66 opens 9/1. Looks like it's not wilderness either. It is in a grizzly area though.

I'd be interested to hear what you find out about that unit. Keep this in mind: In my experience there is always a reason for an unusual reg like that. For example in Montana and Idaho there are places that open up to gun hunting on September 15th. The reason is they are rugged wilderness (Selway and Bob Marshall) and you just can't get there later in the year. So make sure you look into the terrain as well as land ownership in the area.

Keep this in mind to: If it looks too good to be true it probably is. No such thing as "easy elk". Anywhere I hunt if you could walk in there with a gun you'd kill a nice 6 point bull in 1 day. But... they'd be extinct in a couple years there.

Whole heartedly agree with what Indian Summer said. There's a reason for that area NOT having an archery season.

Just a cursory overhead look at area 66 on Google, it appears as though it looks a lot more like antelope country than elk.
