Guided hunt...

A buddy of mine is trying to find a reasonable guided/semi-guided hunt for elk with a rifle. He was looking at heading into the Bob for 8 days of hunting and two of travel, at a cost of about $4000 without tags. I have a few close friends that have done the hunt in recent years, and what they saw MANY miles back wasn't impressive by my standards. (As in only seeing elk 2 of the 10 days and a success rate of 25% on nothing big)

Anyone have any suggestions in the $5k range each? It's for 4 people.

There are some ranches in NM in the $5k range that I know of that are probably the best option at this point. But public or private land really doesn't matter. If you are more comfortable sending me a PM, I totally understand.

never hunted with them but he sure sounded like a stand up guy to call for information.

Slim, I'd recommend checking with Joe, Indian Summer. I think he may be able to provide some good options either guided or not for a couple of states. Yes, I've heard some not so good reports myself from the Bob area over the last handful of years; it's not the same as it used to be.

Why not look for a good drop camp.maybe you can get into a better area during a good early rifle season in the flattpos of CO. Check with winterhawk in CO.

The Bob Marshall Wilderness is great.... for sightseeing. Elk numbers are very low there though. Also lots of that country is so brutally rugged that covering a zillion miles to find the few elk that are there isn't very feasible.

I'd pass on Two Bear Outfitters. The guy only has 2 years of running his business under his belt. You can camp at your truck and hunt the area. If you do want to hunt the area let me know and I'll give you more information than Alan himself could. I've hunted that spot for over 25 years. OK hunting.... at times if you don't mind competing with locals, but not worth paying for. Paul might agree with me on that. He knows Alan. But being the stand up guy he is he listens to his mother so if he doesn't have anything nice to say he probably won't say anything at all. (grin)

I have some good hunt plans if he is interested in DIY hunting but if he wants outfitted I have two outfitters that I'd recommend. One in Montana and one in Wyoming. Montana is bulls only and Wyoming is either sex elk. Montana hunting is on foot, Wyoming there is lots of horse riding. Both have guaranteed licenses. Both are right around the 5k mark for cost. Are you sure about this, he has been an Archery Talk sponsor for years and has shown great success. Actually one of the few MT outfitters I would of considered considering his previous AT presence. I know they didn't take clients for a few years because of personal issues so makes me now wonder if it has a different owner.

Positive. Last year was only the second year he ran the outfit. The first year he ran it he had a mutiny among his employees. The year before that he guided for me for a few weeks. Terrible guide. Scared of horses. Walked the hunters to death to avoid riding. His camp is only 30 minutes from a major parking area. The one and only drop camp isn't any further. I've known the last 4 owners of that outfit.

I also know more than one crappy outfitter with good reviews. It's the internet!
