So How did your Broadheads preform this year?

So I had several options/ideas this year for what to use broadhead wise. I bought the Ulmer edge, still had Rage Hypodermic from last year, and then I bought some new replacement blades for the Standard Slick Tricks that I bought last year when I hunted Colorado.

To say the least I wasn't impressed with the Ulmer edge BH's at all. They didn't fly like field points as they say they do, and as far as sharpness I'd give them 1 out of 5 stars. I did some research on the dullness of the blades and a Rep from the company does a demo on Youtube to refute this. http://youtu.be/MKsiCAWcvMc He says it has a single bevel so it will not feel as sharp, then proceeds to take a package of "returned" blades and test them on paper, a rubber band, and his leg hair... I tried these... Ya it failed all 3 test.

As for the Rage BH, I decided I wasn't going to shoot them for elk. I know some do, and I've killed some whitetails with them but decided against it. I may shoot them again someday for deer, but for now I've decided to stick with...
The Slick Trick standard 100's. They flew great out of my Mathews Reezen, and I would say they shot more like field points than the Ulmer Edge did. They are by FAR the sharpest blades I've ever felt or used. I shot the one head into a block target probably 25-30 times and I'm still scared to touch the blades. The Mercedes blades are the bomb! (Are kids still say that? Haha) I've shot Thunderheads, muzzy's and an assortment of other trocar pointed, and cut on contact heads and nothing compares to the ST Period!! I was very confident with them to 55 yards. 5-6" groups of 5 arrows. At 65 yards the groups got around the 8-10"inches just a bit to big for my liking, but I'm glad the good Lord gave me a nice 25 yard shot so I didn't have to make that call!

I shot my bull just a touch back as he was quartering to me a bit and walking slowly as I released. You can see in my Avatar about 4-5 inches behind the shoulder is the entrance hole. The arrow went completely through the bull and only barely hung out of the back leg/ham of the passenger side by the fletchings. I was very impressed and am amazed how sharp the broad head still I! Now after the bull was down (not 100% sure of my first shot), I snuck up on him to make sure he was dead, I decided to make sure and put another arrow in him. I got to within 20 yards and peered over the hill and loosed an arrow behind his shoulder. The arrow hit home with a thud, but the bull didn't move. He had already expired! After examining my arrow from the 2nd shot the Gold Tip Pro Hunter 7595 was shattered on the nock end. After breaking the bull down it was apparent that I had hit the opposite inside shoulder. The broadhead had no visible damage and still flies true and seems to be as sharp as it was out of the packaging.

SO why am I telling all you guys this... One reason! First hand experience! When I research I seem to have a hard time getting honest answers, and situational evidence of something working or not. Believe me my mind was not on Slick Tricks before this fall after last year losing my bull while using them. (Now I'm not blaming them for the lost bull, I was trying to build my confidence and make sure I was 100% confident in my equipment this year.) I can say without hesitation now that Standard Slick Tricks will be in my quiver when I head west from now on!

I know there are tons of great BH's out there let hear why you think so! (please lets keep this to ELK hunting Broad Heads) I know my buddy swears by Montac G5's after taking a Black bear last year with them and is now completely sold on them. He used them this year for elk with confidence however he didn't get to loose an arrow with them so I can't give you feed back on them. They seem to be a great head and felt pretty darn sharp. Anyone use em?

Mine went into my quiver just fine. Thanks for rubbing it in Montec G5 for me. but looking at Shuttle T locks. But I have to many G5 to give up on them

Made the switch to Viper Tricks, I won't be switching EVER again. The steel in their blades is by far the best I've ever used.

Shot my 4th bull with muzzy 100 grain 3 blade. I will be sticking with these broadheads, they fly great out of my mathews switchback xt and I like the practice blades. They keep working so I don't see the need to switch.

Muzzy mx4 did the job again. I actually bought some Shuttle T-locks to try, but chickened out just before the season due to the blades spalling after target practice.

I used the xbow 150 grain slick tricks. They are basically a slick trick magnum only heavier. I used them to get more foc. They did a great job and were super sharp. I've used various slick tricks and they've all performed well.

my bow is pretty tuned.

this year, for added confidence in the long shot, added forgiveness..i twisted on Rage Hypodermics. 100gr. i put one in a deer on a uphill shot and never found the arrow. it went thru the deer and behind the ribs, out in front of the shoulder, and kept on going. @62 yards.

i'll use them 100% this january for AZ couse deer. they flat out fly!!

for my upcoming hog hunts this winter, i am doing the Montecs. i tried the slicktrick 100 mags as well. both shoot fine! i do know that i really have to watch my grip and not punch the trigger. it is easier to flub a broadhead shot.

i need to get to the range to see what broadheads are doing at 60 yards.

Muzzy mx3 125 grains. Could not be happier with them. Fly great. Only shot one elk with them, but have been shooting deer with them for a few years. I haven't had to track anything. Every animal has gone down in sight. Not to be confrontational, but mechanicals for elk? Nah. They barely penetrate deer. You CAN get fixed blade broadheads to fly like field points.

Didn't get a chance to use 'em while out elk hunting, but I did whack a nice wt doe the week after:
23 yds, through scapula, rib bone, lungs, then the other side rib bone and 6 inches into the dirt. No damage, just a couple minutes on a whet stone and back into the quiver. First year with them (switched out from mechanicals) and I'm very impressed!

I tested three this year, all 125 grain fixed blades (But, am using Spitfire Mechanicals for Whitetail) First: I believe every well designed broadhead will hit with field points out of a properly tuned bow with proper form. But, some are inherently more forgiving of less than perfect tune or form. With that out of the way:

Wac 'Em: Ended up hunting with these, because they flew the best for me. Basically, they hit with field points more consistently than the other two I tried. I did damage the broadhead and lose blades when I hit my elk. So not as robust as I'd like, but they got the job done.

Shuttle T: These would have been my second choice, but didn't hit as consistently as the Wac 'Em so didn't use them except on the range.

VPA: Strongest and best designed broadhead I've seen, but less forgiving. They are a one piece, cnc machined broadhead. I swear you could shoot these things through anything, re-sharpen them, and they'd be fine. Center punched a rock in a stone wall last year while practicing, shattered the arrow behind the broadhead. Dinged it up pretty good, but it was in remarkably good shape was still fine for a practice head. But, these fly less consistently for me, and are less forgiving based on my testing (Had someone put them through a tuned bow in a hooter shooter, and he got same hole performance out of them though). I used the non-vented, will be trying the vented. I really want to get these to work well for me, but hasn't happened yet.

Next Year: Probably VPA, Muzzy, and Slick Tricks will be in my testing / tuning routine.

I switched to dirt nap gear drt double bevels, and they were devastating flew great and I shot my Muley far back. Hit a rib on the entrance and it snapped it in half, it took out one lung and exited the gut, I let the buck sit overnight because all I seen on arrow was green. Couldn't find no blood and backed out, next morning came in walked 10 yards from where I found arrow with great blood, buck ran 60-70 yards down hill and was piled up dead. He had to be dead before I even left the area and headed to the truck. Don't think I'll switch to anything else for being only a 2 blade, with bleeders and fixed blade they did very good. Can't wait to try them on an elk but didn't get the chance this year. The same arrow I shot my buck with I missed a buck with 2 days before and hit a log, stil sharp and still did great. Plus they have a lifetime warranty

Shuttle T 125. Shot my bull quartered to at 4 yards. Passthru and down in seconds with an awesome bloodtrail (25yards). The entrance and exit were about 4x the cutting diameter of the head. This is what meticulous sharpening gets you. I even sharpen each edge of the chisel tip. The giant entry wound can be seen on my photo on the meatpole. Broadhead is unscathed much like the last few I've put through bulls. Actually, I've never had an elk stop a Shuttle T.

I have taken bulls with Muzzy 4 blade, Muzzy 3 blade, Slick Tricks, Slick Trick magnums, steel force, and Magnus stingers.
they all performed well.
