Newbie to Elk hunting NM Unit 51 (advice welcome)

Hey guys I'm new to hunting. This year my buddies and I drew unit 51 in New Mexico from Oct 11th-15th. Although one of my buddies hunted when he was a kid it's been awhile and most of us haven't been on a hunt before. Does anyone have tips on areas/spots to check out or stay away from? We are going prepared and are confident in our endurance for the hikes expected, just looking for advice. Thanks!
