Collected TC video

I finally collected my trail cams while hunting this week. I had no way of viewing the footage until I got home. If I would have known this guy was in the area, I would have gave it more than a college effort. I was on Bulls pretty much the whole hunt, but I'm not sure if this was one of them. The only one I got a good look at and almost a shot on was a smaller raghornish 6x5. I have one more spot in the area to try next week.

I don't know what it is about that camera, but the Elk really like to mess with it. I had a cow fondle it for 4 hours last year before she knocked it out of place. I tie them to the trees now There is 3 years worth of Elk snot on it now, maybe that's the secret.

Looks like you already have a good handle on several bulls in the area. Use what's working for you there! Early on we find bulls are much more interested in other bulls, (bugles) much more so than cow calls. That will change though by the 8th or so. Advertising sequences along with the raking & rustling brush seems to do very well when within 150yds or so of these bachelors. Too, if familiar with their destination spots an ambush can be equally effective. I find calling more fun & more productive! (grin) This time of year we like locate through bugling, move in & setup with the advertising routine! Bulls are extremely curious as to the competition they may be up against come rutting times!


Remember this, give the elk what they want to hear not what you want them to hear! Do not force unneeded sounds on them because of something you heard or read, read the elk as individuals & work them accordingly!

I'm going to go back out Wednesday the 10th; it looks like we will have a dip in temperature for a few days.

The first Bull I was working pinned me to where I couldn't move any closer. I did a lot of things wrong, but learned a ton for my first encounter. I ended up calling his 3 cows and 2 spikes over to me, so I froze and quit calling. He gave me the nervous grunt a few times and eventually collected his herd back and left. I might have a chance on him again? If not him, I bet one the satellites will move into that spot.

On the way back to camp there were two satellite Bulls that caught me off guard in an opening. They both saw me, one of them smelled me. The next morning I got a bugle out of one of them. I made a setup, but the now educated Bull circled down wind way out of range. Similar to what a pressured coyote would do. I found his wallow, so I might try that.

I hiked 3 miles away to another mountain that day to collect TC footage and hunt some new Bulls. I bugled on my way in and got 2 answers within a quarter mile. I quietly set up camp 30 mins later and had a cow come in on me and a Bull raking:( I remained still and quiet and she left. I snuck down towards where she came from to get into thicker cover to make a stand and there were more cows and spikes. I busted them accidentally, so I did the bull stealing the cow sequence and waited 30 mins. to try and salvage it.

After that I hiked the rest of the way in to get the TC cards and did some bugles along the way. Things were quiet the rest of the day. I hiked back to camp and got there just before dark. I heard an Elk bust down below where the herd had been and then saw movement in front of me. I looked to see a small 6x5 behind a tree at about 12 yards. I drew and waited for him to step out between the trees to look at me.....lol.... Wow was that naive, he trotted across that opening faster than I could think to give him the nervous grunt. I gave it to him, he stopped behind a tree again, then trotted off some more. I gave him another nervous grunt and he stopped again but was now to far away for my skill. Both these Bulls saw me, probably for the second time that day. The next day the woods were quiet and I got no response no where, it was also a lot more warmer that day.

I think if I go back with different calls and a different bugle tube I might have a chance at some of them again? I was using the raging bull and the mini tube. I know with mature deer in the area, once you bust them they are gone for the year. Is this the same with rutting Elk?

I also did get one really healthy bugle out of a basin that is really hard to get into and I never went in to hunt it. I will try and get in there first.

Will the advertising routine still be the thing to do from the 10th on (next week).
