Time after Cold Calling

This subject is most likely worn out, but how long do you wait after cold calling?

Na, it's never worn out! (grin) 30 min to one hour is what we find the best. In the timber country we hunt we will do this style of calling every 1/2 mile to one mile apart depending on the openness of terrain. Also what's important is where you do this depends on time of day. Before 9:30 am we will be near feeding & transition areas, after that it's as close as we dare near the bedding areas without bumping elk, generally 150 to 200 yds out works well. The waiting game takes lots of patience after calling, the more time that goes by the more hunters get antsy & start moving around, big mistake, stay still & listen for the slightest sounds that are out of place. Also look for any movement even the smallest ones, it could be your elk slipping in very cautious!

Are you saying that you cold call for 20-25 minutes (referring to your DVD you just released) and then sit another 30 minutes in silence waiting?

Mike, the info & length of calling in the New DVD are totally different sequences. In a blind calling sequence where cow/calf sounds are used with an intermittent bugle we do this for 5-6 minutes. We will start slow & end slow but peak it in the middle. We would then wait but would add a few cow sounds every 1-5 minutes just to let any elk within earshot know this group is still there. We'll also toss in some creative bugling like shown in the breeding sequence portion of the new DVD but not hot & heavy.

Paul is so right about patience. Don't get antsy, and stick to your plan. I learned the hard way last year when I didn't wait long enough, started walking, and we were startled by the very loud nervous grunt of a bull that was on his way in. Totally caught me off guard and I couldn't answer him in time. Was kicking myself for the rest of the week over that one!!
