Mosquitos

They are horrible in some areas of the mtns this time of year. Anyone have problems with them while hunting early season? How do you deal with them?

In WA, ID & MT, I've never had a mosquito problem in early September and beyond, at least not that I can recall.

I was out last Sunday in the mountains with my thermacell, I could see them swarming everywhere but on me thanks to it. There is no greater invention than the thermacell

Desert mosquitoes can be torturous.
You would think being raised in Minnesota in lake country they couldn't get any worse.
the worst mosquito Ive ever been in was a flooded alphafa field in Utah. We had to put our shirts over our mouth just to breath.
I live in Bannock County Idaho , the county had the highest death rate of horses a few years back from West Nile

I have had only a few days where mosquitoes where bad during the elk hunt. It takes a good rain so the eggs can hatch and for the nasty bugs to mature.

The Cascades and surrounding lowland areas in WA can be beyond brutal for skeetos and little black gnats some years; I think a late snow melt year makes it worse for some reason. I've never had much trouble in MT or ID once you get up in elevation a bit.

i have 40 healing bites right now from last weekend's scout trip.

i cant see how a thermocell works while moving, or in a windy situation. i have a few. they are awesome in a ground blind or stand.

anyone try that knockoff by OFF! ?? it's a lot smaller and lighter.

Still works after 6 times through the wash if that tells you anything! I was able to sit in a stand for bears in Canada in the spring without ever firing up my Thermacell. And since we all live minutes from a Wal Mart it's easy to find.

Visited Panama last month. Everyone steered us to eat massive doses of B1(thiamine) like candy. Ramp it up before the season to make sure you're "supersaturated". Your body can only absorb so much, then it's excreted through pores and skeeters don't like the stuff - you can't OD on it, either.

The thing I like about the permethrin is you apply it to your clothes... not on your skin. I can remember getting sick on deet back in the Boy Scout days. You can also spray it on your tent, sleeping bag etc.

The thing I like about the permethrin is you apply it to your clothes... not on your skin. I can remember getting sick on deet back in the Boy Scout days. You can also spray it on your tent, sleeping bag etc.

Just make sure that you follow the directions explicitly , permethrin is extremely toxic until its dry on the fabric. I knew a guy that spent a week in the hospital over misusing premethrin (didn't allow it to dry overnight)

I was close to 12000 this past weekend, couldn't get my thermacell to light at all, skeeters were there but not too bad.

Boy, I am glad you posted this! I have a case of that stuff in the shop that I need to apply to my clothes. I've never used it, but I wonder how odorless is it? Joe, can you vouch for it not being a strong smell once dried? Does it have any affect on merino wool clothing that your'e aware of?

Yes, it dries odorless and last me thru 6 or 7 washings, I use it for ticks, works great....I'll be more careful, but I've gotten it on me countless times without issue....your milage may vary
