Early season decoy?

Postby WYO_ELK » 08 24, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I will be hunting September 5-12 and have the option of bringing along a Montana decoy. Would you pack one around during this time or are they more effective later in the season. FYI, I am not looking for a herd bull, just whatever comes in.

I find the Montana decoys cumbersome and although I have two of them, I don't take them along ever. I'm trying two new decoys this year: poison arrow gear and the slip system.

Decoys can be helpful when you are calling. The elk expect to see what called, so there is no surprise. I would not use one if you are tree stand or ground bling hunting without calling. The elk may come in anyway, but often they will retreat before you can get a shot at them.

We carry them every year and had success in the early season, we've called in everything from herd bulls to cows. Sometimes with success, sometimes not BUT we have fun! :D IMO it doesn't matter what elk decoy you use, it give the elk something to see then they settle down. Keep the wind in your face and have fun.

Decoys work at all times! We mostly use them partially obstructed by cover a simple tiny tree can work. All I want the elk to see is a flash of that colored movement like a animal is feeding away from the bull your working! This seems to really work for us better than the entire decoy being used . Maybe just sick out the head in a natural movement like an elk would ! I have also used it as cover to cross any area that the bull might otherwise see you crossing! I am usually using this at longer distances only! Good luck and that flash really makes a difference at the right times . Try to imagine watchng a herd feeding in and out of trees you will only see colors and movement at times and that's what they key in on when they come looking for you!
